You are watching: How to Clean Artificial Grass
If you have pets that enjoy the outdoors, or trees surround your lawn, you may find that you need to clean the grass on a more regular basis. That being said, rain does a pretty good job at washing away any minimal surface dirt!
Our advice is here as a guideline – each lawn environment is different so different levels of care will be needed depending on the surroundings and how much the lawn is used. However, our top tip is to clean little and often rather than letting the dirt brew.
1. Weekly Artificial Lawn Care
During the summer months, you may find yourself needing to give your lawn a little more TLC. On a weekly basis, simply use a hose to freshen up the appearance of the pile or you could opt for artificial Grass Cleaner that can be used on all types of artificial grass, we also suggest regular brushing up of the pile as this will to stop it flattening and getting matted.

Chewing gum, sweets and other sticky substances can usually be removed by hand; however, if a piece of chewing gum is being particularly stubborn, you can chill the gum with an ice cube and break off the gum more easily once chilled.
2. Monthly Lawn Care
After a while, artificial grass can get flat and matted so it is also advisable that once a month you brush up the pile of your lawn with our range of Artificial Grass Electric Power Brushes.
This innovative product is just a small fraction of the cost of most industrial, petrol run power tools, which can sometimes damage the fibres of the artificial grass. The brush heads of our product have been specially designed with softer nylon so will not harm your lawn. Frequent usage of the power brush has been known to increase the life expectancy of your grass.
As well as improving the appearance, it will also remove top surface dirt and deeply buried debris. This is also an easier option than manually brushing the pile with a soft bristle broom as this can be hard work and may not remove as much unwanted material. When using this product, to gain best results, pull back against the pile to achieve a natural spruced up appearance. Doing this fairly frequently will help prohibit the pile matting and compacting – once this happens it will be much harder to regain your artificial lawn’s original appearance.
3. Ditch The Debris

As an underlying rule with artificial lawn make sure to keep the lawn clear of leaves. If they start to decompose on the lawn, this will be more challenging to clean, may also affect the fibres of the grass and trigger moss growth. Using a leaf blower or vacuum is a simple and effective way to clear the lawns surface.
4. Get Rid of Urine and Faeces Odour in Artificial Grass
If you are a pet owner, you may be worried about how to clean up after they have done their business! But have no fear! The majority of artificial lawns are all-permeable and so will allow any liquid to pass through easily. For solid waste, use the traditional poop scoop or doggy bag and rinse down with a hose afterwards. The artificial grass will also not lose colour as natural grass does. You can also rest assured that no muddy paw prints will make it into your home after your pet has visited the garden, so that will be one less thing you’ll have to clean up!
If the smell persists, you’ll need to apply turf to deodorise the area, as it will absorb the smell of the urine. Some have had success by using baking soda over the affected areas or spraying a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water on the area to dissolve the baking soda.
5. Preventing Weeds in your Fake Grass
If you haven’t yet laid your artificial grass, you must consider using our Geo-Textile Membrane that helps prevent weed growth through the artificial grass. However, if these do appear you can use a normal weed killer but make sure it is water-based. Weed killer can also be used a couple of times a year to prevent the pesky plants from popping up in the first place!
What NOT to Do
- Do not apply any heat to the lawn… after hosing down, it doesn’t need a blow dry!
- Do not use pesticides to remove any insects – simply hose the surface to remove these unwanted visitors
- Although a garden vacuum can be used on the artificial lawn, do not be tempted to drag Henry the Hoover from the comfort of his internal abode – This could damage the grass and the domestic vacuum.
