While there are many lip exfoliants available to purchase online, it’s an expense I can’t justify. Why spend $10 on a product when you can DIY this at home for $0.10? I have an easy diy sugar lip scrub recipe that uses ingredients you probably have in your kitchen and it only takes a few minutes to make!
When choosing an exfoliant for your, sugar and baking soda are your best choices. The skin on your lips is extremely sensitive and many scrubs can leave them feeling aggravated and raw. They’re both gentle on the skin, yet effective at removing dead skin. I personally like to use sugar, but if you have very sensitive lips you’ll want to use baking soda instead.
DIY Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe
To start you’ll need a small container, coconut oil, and sugar (or baking soda). I added a drops of peppermint essential oils but that’s an optional ingredient.

Fellow these simple steps to make this moisturizing lip scrub.
Melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan and remove from the heat. Mix the white sugar (you can use brown sugar too) and coconut oil together and add 1-2 drops of essential oil. Note that some citrus essential oils are photosensitive and should not be used if you’ll be out in the sun. I used peppermint oil in this diy lip scrub, but other oils like lavender and geranium are wonderful too! Scoop the scrub into a glass jar or container and secure with a lid.
Scoop a small amount of the sugar scrub out of the container and gently rub it on your lips. Massage it on your lips in a circular motion to remove dead skin cells. Rinse off with warm water and follow up with lip balm, lipstick or DIY lip gloss. This scrub can be part of your weekly beauty routine and should be used 1-2 times a week or whenever you have dry lips.
About The Ingredients
Coconut Oil: Organic coconut oil is unlike any other skin product! Because of its low molecular weight and the method of binding to proteins, coconut oil can penetrate the skin more deeply than other products. Alternatively, you may use shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil instead of coconut oil if needed. These oils are a great option when you’re out of coconut oil.
Sugar: You can use white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, or coconut sugar for the base of your lib scrubs. Cane sugar is the standard in most scrubs and has almost no scent, while brown sugar and coconut sugar have a soft sweet fragrance. Sugar is a great natural exfoliator and is safe for sensitive skin.

Scents: Add a fragrance to this lip scrub to create a refreshing aroma. I use organic essential oils, but plant extracts (like vanilla extract), herbs, and fragrances work too. You can also add cocoa powder to the scrub mixture to make a chocolate flavored lip scrub! My favorite essential oils to use in this recipe are: Lavender oil, cinnamon oil, and peppermint oil.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E oil is excellent for preventing rancidity in cosmetics, and it also acts as an anti-oxidant in creams, lotions, baby products, and cosmetics.
