What is French Toast?
French toast is an egg and bread combination that believe it or not has been around since the Roman Empire. Or at least, a more basic version of bread soaked in egg and fried has existed since then. There are many different ways to prepare this simple and basic meal, but it remains a classic breakfast dish even to this day.
French Toast Ingredients
Eggs: We will need 2 large eggs, but you’re welcome to add more if you want an extra boost of protein!
Butter: Adding 2 tablespoons of butter into the batter adds flavor. You should also use butter to grease the pan for additional flavor and to help it be nonstick when cooking.
Milk: Using 1 cup of whole milk (or another milk variety) you can thin down the batter a little and make it last through more slices of bread.
Vanilla: We will need 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. I prefer higher quality vanillas, but you can use what you have on hand.
Spices: Using 1/4 tsp of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg we can add a lot of flavor to this recipe and make it feel comforting in every bite.

Sugar: We don’t need much sugar. Just 2 tablespoons of white sugar are enough to add a caramelized effect to these pieces of French toast as they cook. Brown Sugar can be used instead!
Flour: In my batter, I like to add 1/3 cup flour. Seems strange, as there is already flour in the bread… but trust me. This little difference adds the perfect crispiness to the crust of the French toast.
Salt: Using 1/4 teaspoon of salt we can enhance the flavors in this dish and make it taste fantastic.
Brioche Bread: I like to use a soft, eggy bread like Brioche for French Toast. You’re welcome to use what you have on hand!
Toppings: You can top your French toast with anything you’d like. Some great suggestions include berries, powdered sugar, or even syrup!
How to make this French Toast
Heat a pan over medium heat and add some butter to it and let it melt. You can make sure that the pan is ready by splashing a few drops of water onto it. The pan will sizzle/hiss when it’s heated.
In a bowl add your melted butter and milk. Then add in the eggs and mix some more.
In another container, mix your dry ingredients. Add the wet egg mixture into the dry flour mixture and mix until well incorporated.
Take a slice of Brioche bread and then soak it into the mixture, for about 20 seconds per side until well coated.
Fry it in your prepared pan for a few minutes on each side until it’s nice, golden brown, and crispy.
If you’re making a large batch you can have the oven preheated to 200F degrees and use a baking tray in the oven to hold your french toast at a warm temperature until you’re ready to serve.

What type of pan should I use to cook my French Toast?
Wide skillets and electric griddles are also suitable options if you happen to have those on hand.
I don’t have the nutmeg can I leave this out?
Yes, both the cinnamon and the nutmeg are optional. They make the french toast taste incredible but if you prefer to leave them out that’s fine too because with or without this dish turns out great!
Do I have to use Brioche bread?
For the best results, yes. Brioche is slightly sweet but it has a great dense texture and is nice and thick. Perfect for making French toast. If you don’t have or can’t find Brioche bread that would work, Texas toast would work too.
Why use flour in the ingredients?
The flour adds a certain crispiness to the toast. Trust me, you’ll love it like this and never go back. Gluten-free flour works as well!
Can I make this recipe dairy free?
Definitely! Just substitute the milk for a dairy free milk and use coconut oil instead of the butter to coat the pan. You can use coconut oil or a dairy free butter option as a substitute for the little bit of butter needed in the french toast batter.
Can I reheat French Toast?
Yes. It works great by just putting a slice in the toaster or into the oven for a few minutes. Using a microwave will lose the crispiness though. You can also reheat it on a baking sheet in the oven for a few minutes if you’re trying to reheat a large batch at once.
This is the BEST French Toast Recipe and once you try it, you’ll never go back to any other way again. Thanks to the not-so-secret ingredient, we get the perfect texture every time and a breakfast dish the kids will rave about!
