Trash Bag Sizes

There are many different trash bag sizes available on the market today. The size of the trash bag you need will depend on the amount of trash you need to purge. Some trash bags are designed for specific purposes, such as kitchen waste or yard waste. Others are simply sized according to their capacity. Trash bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for a specific purpose. The most common trash bag shape is the rectangle, which is used for both household and commercial purposes. Other common shapes include the flat bottomed bag, which is often used for industrial applications, and the gusseted bag, which is commonly used for garbage cans and recycling bins.

When choosing a trash bag, it is important to consider the size and shape of the bag, as well as the capacity of the garbage can or bin it will be used in. Choosing the wrong size or shape can result in problems with fit, leaks, and even tearing. Trash bag size is usually determined by the capacity of the garbage can or bin it will be used in. For example, a standard 30-gallon trash can will require a 30-gallon trash bag. However, there are also smaller and larger sizes available for both home and commercial use. Bags and bins do not always perfectly match and we are left with some overhang. This is fairly common and sometimes the overhang is necessary to easily change the liner and transport the waste easier.

Trash Bag Shape

There are two basic shapes of trash bags – square and rectangular. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice for your needs will depend on what you’re using the bag for. Square trash bags can be beneficial due to their practical shape. Rectangular bags are the most common type of trash bag, and they’re usually the cheapest option. They’re also the best choice to stack easily side-by-side if you want a recycling option. Two rectangular bins can take up the same amount of space as a square can, depending on dimensions.

Square vs Rectangular Trash Bags

Square trash bags and rectangular trash bags both get the job done. There isn’t a correct bag per say, but there is a bag that will better suit your needs depending on the waste type and location of your needs. Square bags are ideal for small spaces, as they can fit easily into tight corners. They’re also great for holding odd-shaped items, as there is no risk of trash spilling out due to the wider brim that they have. However, square bags can be more expensive than rectangular bags, and they’re not as good at holding larger volumes of trash. Typically the bag shape can get awkward and overly bulky when stretched to capacity.

Rectangular trash bags on the other hand can take up more space in the can than a square bag as they fit differently. You are often left with more overhang, and also they’re not as good at holding odd-shaped items. They also tend to fill up quicker. Due to the slim trash cans that the bags are made for, waste can take up more space in the receptacle, which often is much smaller than a square can. This can cause a bottleneck much quicker than a square receptacle.

Common Trash Bag Sizes

Similar to the various shapes, trash bags come in a variety of sizes for any need that you might have. There are a variety of trash bag sizes available on the market, each with its own benefits. For example, smaller trash bags are great for everyday household use, while larger ones are better suited for big cleanup projects or demos. The good news is if you’re looking for something in between, there are also medium-sized options available. Trash bags are constructed to meet your varying needs, whatever they may be. Consider the capacity, thickness, and price of the bag to find the perfect option for your needs.

13 Gallon

Typically, 13-gallon trash bags are the most common. 12-16-gallon trash cans are the standard sizes for most homes, specifically kitchens. While they are made for more narrow cans, the capacity reflects a sanitation schedule. Traditionally, this is the size of trash bag you would be changing in your kitchen when you take out the trash.

18 Gallon

Upgrade to an 18-gallon trash bag for a high-traffic area. If you are placing a trash bin in a break room, conference or meeting area, these areas are getting a lot of visitors. These trash bags are ideal for areas that have larger groups of people utilizing the space, than say a traditional home would.

20 Gallon

20-gallon trash bags are perfect for the big jobs, like spring cleaning or backyard clean up. Whether you need to collect large volumes of leaves, or require a bag that’s as good at collecting junk as it is letting your trash breath, these trash bags suit any need. Standard organic or yard waste measured in a 20-30-gallon capacity. These are available at local stores or through the sanitation department of your city.

33 Gallon

The 33-gallon trash bag is great for use in businesses and commercial buildings, as well as homes. While 45-gallon bags are ideal for use in industrial spaces where more room is needed to collect debris, the 33-gallon trash bag is best suited for an outdoor garbage can. A bit smaller than a demo or renovation project trash can, these trash bags are great for outdoor or curb trash. If you want to keep your week’s worth of trash together, these bags can do it. They especially come in handy if you live in an area where your sanitation department or condo requires a one bag maximum for pickup.

45 Gallon

Another factor to consider is the thickness of the bag. If you’re looking for a durable bag that can handle heavy loads, choose a thicker bag such as a 45-gallon trash bag. Thicker bags also tend to be more puncture-resistant, so they’re ideal for use with sharp objects, like nails, screws or drywall pieces.

56 Gallon

The 56-gallon garbage bags offer plenty of room for household and outdoor waste. They also come in handy for organizing sheds, garages and woodshops. Even seasonal If you need a protective outer layer for your storage, consider a 56-gallon bag for your storage needs.

60 Gallon

60-gallon sized trash bags are perfect for getting rid of more than just simple household waste. It’s large enough to accommodate any amount of trash you need to throw away. Consider these for outdoor areas like parks, recreation centers or commercial warehouses. These are commonly seen where not only people gather but larger amounts of them set foot.

How to Find the Right Trash Bags For Your Trash Can

Don’t forget to consider the price of the bag. While all trash bags serve the same purpose, that’s true, there can be a big difference in price depending on the size and thickness of the bag. 13-gallon trash bags are usually the most affordable option, while 20-gallon bags are typically mid-priced. Some types of trash bags, 33-gallon and 45-gallon bags for example, can be more expensive, but they’re also the most durable option. These are expected to be a more commercial use, since the waste is often more severe. Whatever the size of the job is, there is a bag size to efficiently match it.
