What Size Hole Is Needed for a Kitchen Faucet?

When you plan to replace or install a kitchen faucet in your home, it is essential to know some information about sink faucets, such as standard hole size and spacing.

Your new faucet needs to match the number of holes in the kitchen sink. Be sure to verify that the space between the holes fits the faucet you purchase.

But what exactly is the standard faucet hole size for kitchen faucets?

Are All Kitchen Faucets the Same Standard Size?

Since there are many different types of kitchen faucets, there is no standard or typical hole size.

The faucet hole size will vary depending on the kitchen faucet you plan to install. Measure the faucet hole size before you shop.

The Ideal Thickness of a Faucet Hole

Faucet holes have an ideal thickness and hole size, depending on the type of faucet you want to install. The standard size of a faucet’s hole is proportional to the water flowing from the water tanks.

Most manufacturers create faucets with an ideal hole size of 1 3/8 inches or 34.925 millimeters. But some kitchen faucets may require a broader hole that is 1.5 inches. The larger the hole, the greater the amount of water flow.

Is There a Required Number of Holes for a Faucet Installation?

The required number of holes for a faucet installation depends on the faucet type you want to install. Typically, faucet holes vary from one to four, with the fourth hole serving as a place for a soap dispenser.

For standard hole spacing, four inches is the required space for a center set faucet. But some faucet types, like widespread faucets, require a different spacing measurement. The hole in the center for water outlet piping and the knob controls must be of the same standard size hole.

Ideal Faucet Size Hole in the Countertop

Installing a faucet on your countertop may require drilling a hole in it.

Sizing Holes

A standard kitchen faucet with no air gap needs a sizing hole that is at least 7/16 inches in diameter regardless if whether there is an attached tubing with it.

Holes between 1.25 and 1.5 inches can fit standard faucets. The only problem with 1.5-inch holes is that they do not match standard faucet escutcheon plates. There are bigger escutcheon plates available, but they may compromise the aesthetic of the kitchen faucet.

Installing With Existing Holes

If your existing faucet hole is slightly bigger, you must look for a bigger escutcheon plate to fill the slack. But if your existing hole is smaller, then the only solution is to drill bigger.

How To Measure the Faucet Hole Size

If you are going to install a new faucet, you must measure the following:

Approximate Depth — Measure the depth from the sink drain’s lowest point to the sink brim that meets the countertop.

Approximate Width — Determine the width by measuring the outmost surface of the sink from the front up to its back.

Approximate Length — Follow the same process as in measuring the width but do it from left to right of the sink’s outermost edges.

Size the Faucet — For a single-handle faucet, examine the distance between water supply lines located under the tap. If you have a double-handle faucet, you must measure the center of its handle’s length to the center of the faucet itself.

To correctly measure the hole’s inside diameter, try using a slide caliper.

First, place the slide caliper’s inner jaw adjacent to the inside of the faucet hole. Then, slide the scale until it reaches maximum distance. The reading will then appear, indicating the diameter of the faucet’s hole size.

How To Cover Extra Holes in the Sink

If you are trying to find ways to cover the extra holes in your sink, you can cover them with escutcheon plates.

Escutcheon plates are not just ornaments. They also function to connect the pipe’s outside diameter to the inside diameter of its opening.

You can also use the extra single-hole cover plates to cover those extra holes, especially if they are too spaced out from each other.

Your Dream Kitchen Faucet

Kitchen faucets significantly impact a kitchen’s overall look, especially the sink and surrounding walls.

Whatever faucet style you choose, installing them is not that complicated. But keep in mind that determining the faucet hole size and its spacing is essential.
