I love making my own natural skincare products, but making my own face scrubs is probably one of my favorite beauty products to DIY at home. I mean, the possibilities are virtually endless!

Between the different exfoliants and oils and scents and other mix-ins, you could whip up a new recipe every week and never get bored!

Even though I love trying new homemade face scrub recipes, there’s one particular recipe that I come back to over and over, and that’s my simple 2-ingredient baking soda face scrub.

Let me tell you all about it!

Why Baking Soda?

I like this baking soda scrub because it’s a much finer grit than other face scrubs.

You see, most face scrub recipes call for sugar or salt or coffee grounds as the main exfoliant. And while those ingredients do make wonderful scrubs, I find that a two-step exfoliating process works best for my skin.

I like to use a coarser scrub first to get rid of dead skin, and then I follow up with this baking soda scrub to get a polished glow.

It’s kinda like sandpaper. You start with a coarser grit to make quick work of the job at hand, but then you follow with a finer grit to get a smooth finish.

Anyway, if you’d like to try a two-step exfoliating process, or even if you just want a gentler face scrub than the coarse recipes you typically see on Pinterest, then you’re in the right place! I’m going to show you how to make your very own natural baking soda face scrub so you can get that polished glow too!

Is This Natural Face Scrub Right for Your Skin Type?

Before we get to the good stuff, let’s start with the basic question everyone always asks:

Is this natural face scrub right for my skin type?

In a word, yes!

  • It’s fantastic for oily and acne-prone skin because both baking soda and coconut oil have antibacterial properties.
  • It’s great for dry skin because the coconut oil is moisturizing.
  • It’s even perfect for sensitive skin because it doesn’t contain any irritating chemicals.*

No matter your skin type, this baking soda face scrub is probably just right for you. However, you can always test it in a small area before you apply it to your whole face.

*Note: I have very very VERY sensitive skin, and this scrub doesn’t give me any problems!

But Wait, Isn’t Baking Soda Too Alkaline for Your Skin?

It’s true that baking soda has a higher pH than skin. Skin is naturally slightly acidic, so baking soda can be irritating if you use too much of it too frequently. However, I’ve never had any problems out of this baking soda face scrub, and I’ve been using it a couple times a week for well over a year.

If you’re concerned about your skin’s pH, you can always follow up with a splash of diluted apple cider vinegar on your face to help normalize its pH. I’ve been doing that lately, and I think I prefer including that extra step.

Here’s why:

Before, my skin would feel slightly warm for a few minutes after I used the baking soda scrub. It didn’t burn or feel itchy or hurt or anything like that. It just felt warm and then went back to normal a few minutes later.

But since I started putting diluted apple cider vinegar on my face after I rinse off the scrub, my face doesn’t feel warm at all. I can’t say for sure if vinegar is the reason why, but I think I’ll keep using it just in case.

If you want to follow your scrub with a vinegar rinse, simply combine one part water with one part apple cider vinegar and pat it on your skin. Leave it on for a few seconds and then rinse with water.

I keep my diluted vinegar in a bottle so I can easily pour it into my hands.

DIY Natural Baking Soda Face Scrub Recipe

Supplies Needed

  • Small jar with a tightly fitting lid
  • Tablespoon

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil

Directions

Mix the baking soda and coconut oil together in a jar.

If the coconut oil is too hard to mix, you can pop it in the microwave for a few seconds or squish it with your fingers to melt it a little bit. Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees, so it doesn’t take much to get it soft enough to mix.

This will seem like a small batch of face scrub, but it will last you a while! I’ve been using one batch for about two months now, and I still have PLENTY left in the jar.

How to Use Your Homemade Baking Soda Face Scrub

Start with clean, wet skin. Scoop out a small amount of scrub – a nickel-sized amount is enough – and work it between your fingers to melt it a little bit. Massage the scrub all over your face (avoiding the eye area) using small circular motions with your fingertips. Rinse with warm water.

If your face feels too oily after rinsing, you can wash your face with your normal face cleanser or this homemade face cleanser.

Finish with your normal moisturizer or this homemade face serum.

You can exfoliate your skin once a week or every few days if your skin is particularly dry.

My Two-Step Exfoliation Process

Okay, I guess technically it’s a three-step process now that I’ve started using apple cider vinegar after the baking soda scrub, but here’s what I do:

While I’m in the shower, I start with a coarser sugar scrub. Right now, I’m using my chocolate citrus face scrub and it smells sooooo good!

I massage the coarser scrub all over my face and neck (it’s much easier to exfoliate your neck when you’re in the shower) until the sugar is dissolved.

Then, I massage this baking soda scrub all over my face and neck. I really concentrate on my nose and forehead because those are the places where I tend to accumulate more dead skin.

After I rinse off the baking soda scrub, I pour a little bit of diluted apple cider vinegar into my palm, rub my hands together, and then pat the vinegar all over my face and neck. I leave this on for a few seconds before I rinse it off.

I do this process at least once per week, but I try to aim for two or three times per week so my skin stays bright and clear. It sounds like a complicated process, but the whole thing really only takes me about two minutes or less.
