When shopping for doormats, Van Noppen says it’s important to consider dimension and shape because a door mat can play an important role in the design of your front porch or patio. You should also note how much space you have between the floor and the door to open it without obstruction.

“Doormats can also be used to add innovative design contrast,” she says. “For instance, if most of your furniture is rectangular, try a circular or oblong door mat.”

Despite serving the same function of cleaning your shoes, doormats can come in a variety of materials. Choosing the best material for your door mat may depend on a few factors, including your area’s climate and how often you go outside.
“If you opt for a style without paying attention to substance, you may end up with a cheaply made mat that will not last or work well,” says Van Noppen.
For example, if you live in a rainy area, a rubber door mat may work best, although it may not be as visually appealing. If you live near a beach, a coir door mat might be the perfect fit. Van Noppen also recommends coir doormats for their timeless and attractive look that can fit in with nearly any type of style. Plus, they’re eco-friendly.
Before buying a door mat, Van Noppen first suggests determining how much maintenance you want to put into a door mat. Some may need to be machine washed while others can simply be hosed down, shaken clean, or swept.

When it comes to trapping dirt, dry mud, sand, and other types of light debris, coir mats are usually the most effective since the naturally coarse fibers easily scrape your shoes. Polypropylene mats with small blades are also great at removing dirt.
Van Noppen explains that the main difference between a door rug and a door mat is the intended use. Door rugs are more decorative, which means they’re usually thinner and better suited for indoor use whereas doormats are thicker, made of more durable material, and intended for either indoor or outdoor use.
“The ideal door mat strikes a balance between the look and the function by providing something beautiful that will help to trap dirt,” she says.
