The 10 Best Outdoor Ceiling Fans of 2023, Tested and Reviewed

How We Tested the Outdoor Ceiling Fans

We installed and tested 11 ceiling fans, including four indoor/outdoor fans in our own homes across the country. After 1,200 hours of testing the fans, we selected the best outdoor options for this roundup. We also researched dozens of top outdoor ceiling fans to round out this list. All fans were evaluated on ease of installation, design, effectiveness, quality, and value. For the options we tested, we installed each fan in an appropriately-sized room, timing the set-up process and noting if the instructions were easy to follow or confusing. We used these fans daily, paying close attention to the effectiveness and the noise level of each speed setting. We tested all speed and light settings (where applicable) and tested how easy it was to change the direction of the blade. We also tested any additional features, such as a remote control or smart settings.

What to Look for in an Outdoor Ceiling Fan

Blades

While most fans have between three and five fan blades, larger units can have up to eight or ten. When a fan has more blades, it requires a larger support unit and more space to operate. Both the Minka-Aire F896-65-CL Xtreme H2O 65 Inch Outdoor Ceiling Fan and the Monte Carlo Maverick Super Max Matte Black Ceiling Fan are great options if you have a spacious area. If you are looking for a ceiling fan for a smaller area, look for one with smaller fan blades, such as the Home Decorators Collection Heritage Point 25-inch Integrated LED Indoor/Outdoor Natural Iron Ceiling Fan.

Damp Rating

It’s important to think about the surrounding conditions. If you get a lot of rain or snow, look for an outdoor ceiling fan that is wet-rated. A wet-rated ceiling fan can withstand high levels of moisture because the hardware and electrical parts inside are protected from water damage. On the other hand, a damp-rated fan can handle some moisture, but it needs to be better protected. The Hampton Bay Gazebo III Indoor/Outdoor Natural Iron Ceiling Fan is wet-rated, making it an excellent choice for rainy environments. Keep in mind that some fans have wet-rated blades but damp-rated motors, so they still require protection.

Control Mechanism

If you have high ceilings or a large room, or just want the convenience of being able to change the fan speed or light without getting up, a remote-controlled ceiling fan is the way to go. Many fans come with a remote, such as the Hampton Bay Mena 54-Inch Ceiling Fan. Budget-friendly options, like the Honeywell Duval 52-Inch Tropical Ceiling Fan, may have a remote control sold separately or have a pull chain to turn on.

Why Trust The Spruce?

This article was researched and written by Katie Melynn, a freelance writer who specializes in home and family products. Melynn has been writing for The Spruce since 2019.

To compile this list, Melynn looked for ceiling fans with adjustable speeds and lights. She also considered cost, ease of installation, and features and talked to John Barnes, a design expert at Lamps Plus, about current trends and tips for installation.

Jenica Currie, a commerce editor for The Spruce, updated this list with additional products that we installed and tested in our own homes across the country.
