What is the Best Lock for a Garden Gate?

Published by

So often I see intruders attack a property from the back. As an emergency locksmith in London I know that Garden gates are a common burglar access point.

This post is a follow up to our most popular post on What are the Best Door Locks. In this post we advise specifically on the best locks for wooden gates.

In the winter months and in the run up to Christmas it very important to secure any rear entrances to a property. Saying that it is also important during the brighter months. Overall the importance of back gate security should not be underestimated.

When choosing the best lock for a garden gate or a side gate lock it is advisable to speak to a qualified locksmith for advice for your individual set of circumstances. A quote from a reputable locksmith should be free of charge. At IKS Locksmiths we are Master Locksmiths Association Approved specialists in door lock installation in London.

Investing in the wrong lock for the purpose could potentially cost you more money in the long run. Get some professional advice before doing a DIY gate lock installation.

Gate Locks for Wooden Gates

Some security gate locks for wooden gates can be bought from the local hardware shop and fitted quite easily. However, the more secure wooden gate locks require some skill and experience to fit.

Top Tip: Always use a key operated or digital lock for a wooden gate!

What Locks Can Be Used on Wooden Gates?

These are locks that can be used on garden or side gates but are not necessarily the best locks;

Rim Locks

These are not the most strong and secure and can be easily forced open.

Long Throw Gate Lock

My personal preference, it can be key operated from both sides and is suitable for garden gates, side gates and garage doors.

Hasp and Staple Lock

Works with a padlock.

Mortice Deadlock

If fitted correctly it can be the most secure option for a wooden gate. Can be key operated from both sides. Requires skill to fit.

Mortice Sashlock

Like a mortice deadlock, except it has handles, not suitable for all gates.

Digital Gate Lock

There are other locks available for gates, but these are the most common ones.

RUSTY GATE LOCK: Any of these lock types can be susceptible to rust, however some locks are more weather resistant than others. It is important to choose a high-quality lock suitable for outdoor use. A Yale lock is unsuitable for use as an external gate lock as it will not weather well. The digital gate lock pictured above is waterproof.

So, what are the best locks for gates?

The Best Garden Gate Locks

It is important to have a good quality key operated lock for a garden gate.

In my experience the best locks for garden gates are as follows;

  • A mortice deadlock is ideal for bespoke metal gates. It will provide a good level of security.
  • A long throw gate lock would be the next best thing for gates that won’t accommodate a mortice. They are great on timber doors and can be operated with a key from both sides of the gate.
  • A haspe and staple lock secured with a good padlock can also be a good option, however it can only be accessed on one side of the gate.
  • A digital gate lock is a good option for gardener access. A good quality waterproof digital lock will avoid the problem of rusty gate locks.

The Best Locks for Side Gates

Side gate locks can be for individual properties or shared. My advice on choosing the best lock for side gate access is the same as choosing a lock for a garden gate. The main difference is that the lock will be used by multiple users. Remember that if one property owner loses a key the lock will need to be changed.

The Best Gate Locks for Home Insurance

The better the gate lock the less likely you are to be burgled. Insurance companies won’t specify a particular type of gate lock. They would advise that you have a gate lock, and some could specify that the gate lock should be key operated. Always read the small print on your home contents insurance policy to make sure that you comply with the locks required. Not meeting the requirements of your home insurance policy could result in a failed insurance claim. In this article Admiral advise how to protect your garden from thieves.
