The best spray paint for kitchen cabinet facings is a universal solvent-based paint or solvent-based paint formulated for the surface you will paint.
We use solvent-based paint in our professional line of work because it is specifically formulated to form a hard and durable finish. It is also widely universal, capable of lasting on timber, vinyl, and acrylic kitchen cabinets.

If you are unable to get a hold of a universal solvent-based interior paint, your choice of paint should be based on the material of the surface you will paint. Manufacturers often have separate painting systems for timber and plastic.
Best spray paints for kitchen cabinets
Here are a few product recommendations:
Please note: We have not been paid to mention these brands nor do we endorse them.
Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch
Ideal for: Touch ups, colour matching and small projects.

If you need to colour match a kitchen cabinet or touch up a door, Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch is excellent spray paint for the job. It’s a quick-drying spray paint supplied in a spray can for all surfaces, including timber, laminate, acrylic and plastic. It’s available in 42 colours with gloss, satin and matte finishes.
Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint
Ideal for: Full colour changes.
Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint is specially formulated for kitchen cupboards with glossy, satin, matte and chalky finishes. It’s compatible with air sprayers – dilute the paint by 5-15% and use a tip that delivers a 6-inch spray fan (311 is ideal). You can also use a roller to apply it but avoid brushes because they tend to create imperfections.
Avoid water and oil-based paints
Water and oil-based paints are no good for plastic, acrylic, and vinyl cabinet facings. These paints will not bond with the surface in a durable way. You need solvent-based paint that will bond with the substrate mechanically.
You can use water and oil-based paints on timber cabinet facings; however, the finish will only be durable if you SAND the finish first. This will remove the protective topcoat, which is impossible to paint over with water or oil-based paint in a durable way.
The easiest route with plastic, acrylic, vinyl and timber cabinet facings is to use a solvent-based painting system. These paints do not require you to sand anything — they will bond with the surface on their own accord.
Avoid 2K paints

2K paints (two-part paints) are specified for external projects where there is a significantly increased need for durability. They take over 24-hours to dry in most cases and are difficult to use, reserving them for professional application only.
Avoid brushing (if you can)
Although some kitchen cabinet paints reduce brush lines, you will always have small imperfections in the finish when applied this way. We recommend sticking to spray paint for kitchen cabinets to achieve a factory finish.
If you have to use contact painting, use a roller instead of a brush. You can pick up smooth, low-pile rollers that will give you a smooth, even paint finish.
When to call in a professional sprayer
It can be difficult to know what paint to use for kitchen cabinet facings, especially when durability is a key concern. If you have never spray painted before, or you have limited time on your hands, you might not be able to do the project either.
We provide a comprehensive kitchen spray painting service that will change the appearance of your kitchen for good. All our work has a 10-year guarantee! We use spray paints manufactured in Europe with a low VOC.
After we’ve spray painted your kitchen cabinets, it will appear as though you had your kitchen originally installed in the new colour. Your kitchen cabinets will be painted to a factory standard, and it will be impossible to tell they weren’t installed that way.
