How to Reset Blink Camera (2023 Version)

Published by

Blink cameras connect to a hub called Sync Module and this brings the question: how to reset this camera? Should you reset the camera directly or the module instead? Maybe both?

To reset a Blink camera, you need to reset the Sync Module and this can be done by holding down the reset button on the module’s side. Wait until it turns red which indicates that the Blink camera was reset.

Once reset, the Blink camera system requires installing the module the and Blink app. If the Blink camera operates without the module, then you can reset straight to the camera (using the built-in reset button).

Some users try to reset the camera if it shows offline. That’s not the first thing you should do. If your Blink camera is offline, it’s recommended to power cycle the Sync Module or your WiFi router, and most of the time the camera will be back online. By power cycling, we mean turning the unit off for 15 seconds and then powering it on again.

In the next section, we’ve listed the full steps on how to troubleshoot and reset a Blink camera. It includes instructions for various Blink camera models and types.

Reset your Blink camera (instructions)

The Sync Module is a hub used by Blink cameras to connect and operate on the network. Camera models such as the Blink Indoor, Outdoor, XT, and XT2 cameras use the Sync Module device which connects all of them to the internet.

Instead of resetting the camera directly, it’s recommended to reset the whole system by using the reset button located on the Sync Module. By doing that, you ensure that the system is on factory settings and you can start the setup from the scratch.

Blink camera is offline, should I reset it?

That’s not the first thing you should do. If the Blink camera or Sync Module is offline, we’d recommend power cycle the unit. Simply turn it off, wait a few seconds (15 secs) and then power it back on. See if the camera is back online.

Most of the time the Blink offline issue is solved by power cycling the unit. And when you do so, there’s no need to reconfigure your system which is time-consuming. When you reset, the unit goes to factory settings and you need to do everything from the beginning.

In other words, if the Blink camera is offline, power cycle first, and then, if the issue is not solved, reset it. Here are the steps to properly power cycle the Blink camera system:

  • Unplug the Sync Module power cable.
  • Wait at least 15 seconds.
  • Plug the power back in.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds for the system to power back up. The lights should be solid green and blue.

Another thing you should do is power cycle your WiFi router. This may fix any network connectivity issues that your devices are experiencing. Just unplug your modem and WiFi router and wait for at least one minute. Plug the modem back in first and then power on the router. Wait for all of them to be online and see if the Blink camera is working properly.

How to reset the Blink Sync Module

If power cycling solves nothing, then let’s move to the next step. You can reset your Blink camera system by resetting the Sync Module piece which is pretty easy.

Go to the Sync Module and locate the reset button (next to the USB port), press and hold it until the light turns red. Usually, it takes about 30 seconds. You’ll know that the unit was reset successfully when you see the green solid light and the flashing blue light.

Helpful Tip: Make certain to perform a reset before and while the sync module is plugged in for best results. We also recommend inserting either a paperclip or small screwdriver (not safety pins or thumbtacks) to reset the device.

Once reset, the Sync Module will go to factory mode. This means all the cameras will be offline and you need to set them up again. Basically, the system needs to be re-configured. To see your cameras again, you need to delete your Sync Module from the Blink app and reinstall it.

Follow these steps to delete and reinstall your Sync Module:

  • Open up the Blink app and click on the ? icon.
  • Select “Delete Sync Module.”
  • Scan or enter the module’s serial number then tap “Delete”.
  • Go back to the home screen and click on the + sign (to add the system_.
  • Select “Blink wireless camera system.”
  • Scan or enter the module’s serial number again.
  • Select your Blink system and tap “Discover Device.”
  • Click on “Join” then select “Done.”

How to reset Blink Mini cameras

Any Blink camera that operates without a Sync Module, can be reset individually. It’s pretty straightforward, just locate the reset button on the bottom of the camera. Press and hold it for 30 seconds and it will go to factory defaults.

Additionally, you can use the reset button if your camera is having trouble connecting to the Internet or when you want to link it to a Sync Module.

Sometimes finding the reset button on the Blink camera may be tricky. All you have to do is inspect the unit and see where the reset button is located.

For example, the reset button on the Blink Mini Camera is located on the bottom of the camera, next to where the stand attaches and towards the front side of the camera. There is an inscription on the camera, next to the button, that reads “reset”.

The reset button on Blink XT and XT2 Cameras is located in the battery compartment. The reset button is at the top, the same spot the Serial Number sticker is placed. There is a hole in the plastic housing, and the reset button is hidden in that hole.

The reset button on Blink Indoor and Outdoor Cameras is located in the battery compartment. Next to the right side battery, the reset button is recessed in the hole and you need to use a paperclip to reach it.

Conclusion

Resetting your Blink camera system is easy, but the procedure is often unnecessary. Many users try to reset the camera if it shows offline. You should first try power cycling your camera, internet devices, and then your Sync Module.

Only if these methods don’t bring your camera online, then it’s recommended to reset the Sync Module by pressing the reset button on the side of the device. Then you need to delete the Sync Module in the Blink app and reinstall it. Basically, when the unit is reset, you will need to do all the configurations from the beginning.

For the Blink cameras that operate without a Sync Module, you can reset the camera using the reset button on it. Lastly, if you still have problems with your camera, just call Blink support and they’ll help you iron any possible issues.
