The Pros and Cons of Using Epoxy Floors for Outdoor Places

Published by

Epoxy is one of the most durable floor coatings available for outdoor spaces. It’s easy to install, lasts for a long time and is relatively inexpensive (especially compared to other outdoor flooring options). Plus, this floor coating is perfect for pool decks and patios thanks to its waterproof features.

Epoxy Is Durable

One of the best parts about using epoxy outdoors is its durability. It can last nearly half a lifetime if installed correctly. If you plan on installing outdoor flooring, epoxy is a great option. Its durability makes it a perfect candidate for outdoor patio spaces and pools. You won’t need to worry about replacing your epoxy flooring every few years.

The Downside

Epoxy must be installed properly, or you won’t be able to reap the benefits of its durability. An improperly installed epoxy floor can result in various issues. You might find mold and water seeping underneath your epoxy floor. Or, you might simply find the flooring lifting up off the concrete below.

Epoxy Is Inexpensive

Epoxy is an extremely affordable option for outdoor spaces. Most people don’t want to spend a lot of money on outdoor flooring because they know it’s going to be exposed to the elements anyway.

Outdoor spaces require an inexpensive and easy to maintain solution. Enter epoxy flooring. You’ll only spend around $3-$12 per square foot for epoxy. This means you can save some of your flooring budget for pool supplies and comfy patio chairs.

The Downside

Epoxy is only inexpensive if installed right. Some homeowners opt to install epoxy themselves to save even more money. While you could install the flooring yourself, you want to spend a little money to ensure the flooring is installed correctly.

Epoxy Lasts a Long Time

You won’t need to worry about redoing your patio anytime soon if you opt for epoxy flooring. The average lifespan of durable floor coatings can be upwards of 10 years. Luckily, it’s easy to install and takes very little time to allow the epoxy to set. You simply need to apply the base, epoxy and top coat before waiting a few hours for your floor to dry. In only a few hours, you’ll have a shiny floor that will look great for years to come.

The Downside

You still need to care for epoxy. One of the few downsides to this type of flooring is that it can easily crack and chip. Once a crack has started, it’s only a matter of time until the seal is broken, and you’ll need to replace a large section of your flooring. Try to keep hard, blunt objects away from your epoxy to keep it looking great.

Epoxy Is Waterproof

Epoxy is one of the most durable floor coatings for pool decks because it’s waterproof. You don’t need to worry about the floor getting wet because epoxy is like a hard, sealed shell. This means it’s also easy to clean. Unlike with wood, you can spill practically anything on epoxy, and it won’t matter because you can simply mop up the spill.

The Downside

The only downside to this waterproof coating is that it can be very slippery when wet. If you’re using your epoxy flooring near a pool, you’ll want to make sure that everyone knows not to run on the flooring.
