The Best Mexico Resorts With Outdoor Showers

One of the pleasures of being on vacation is that you can do things you wouldn’t do at home. The idea of taking a shower outdoors certainly falls into that category for most travelers, especially for those who hail from the cooler climates of the U.S. and Canada. The allure of warm water and warm temperatures — not to mention a sumptuously appointed hotel room with its own private outdoor shower — is certainly enough for any winter-hating traveler to jump on the next plane to Mexico.

All you really need for an outdoor shower, of course, is some kind of a faucet on the outside of a building, and enough privacy to allow for comfort. But a growing number of luxury hotels around Mexico have upped the ante when it comes to offering open-air amenities for guests, all designed to leave them not only refreshed but pampered.

These are a few of the best options for beautiful outdoor showers around Mexico.

Pacific CoastMultiple properties along Mexico’s Pacific coast provide their own take on the natural shower experience. In the Riviera Nayarit, the super-chic Imanta Resorts Punta de Mita is a perfect example of how luxury accommodations and natural beauty come together, with each room and suite designed to inspire a sense of privacy and oneness with nature. The gorgeous outdoor showers are just one element of the Imanta’s nature-based luxury approach. Thanks to careful planning and landscaping, the showers offer a peaceful sense of privacy even as they are fully open-air.

Nearby, The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort offers private, 6.8-square-foot outdoor showers with every guestroom. And W Punta de Mita’s oceanfront suites — each of which has an evocative name such as Oasis, Haven and Fabulous — all have an open-door shower that faces an outdoor whirlpool on the private backyard patio.

Further north, in Los Cabos, guests can enjoy the warm weather while showering outdoors at Solaz, a Luxury Collection Resort, Los Cabos. Each of the property’s Gallery Rooms and Suites offers outdoor showers, constructed with palo de arco, a certified sustainable wood from Baja California’s desert.

Mexican CaribbeanOutdoor showers often inspire hoteliers to come up with creative and evocative names as well as unique decor. At the all-inclusive, adults-only TRS Yucatan Hotel in the Riviera Maya, for example, guests can get wet in a Maya-style outdoor shower that’s decorated with stone walls, an exposed wood roof and a large rainforest shower head, all set on the private lakefront wooden terrace of the hotel’s couples-oriented Romance Bungalows.

Mahekal Beach Resort, located in Playa del Carmen, offers a variety of accommodation options with open-air showers. The 430-square-foot Penthouse King room, for example, is outfitted with a Moon Shower on a private terrace with a thatched palapa roof and dreamy views of the beach and the Caribbean Sea. Hammocks and woven outdoor furniture add to the sense of relaxation.

YucatanThe state of Yucatan is a rewarding place to indulge at unique hotels with impressive outdoor amenities. At Chable Yucatan, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, every accommodation, from the 38 casitas to the two spacious villas, has an indoor/outdoor shower in the bathroom, offering lush jungle views. The 8,000-square-foot Presidential Villa complements its open-air shower with an outdoor private pool and Jacuzzi.

Several of Yucatan’s beautifully historic haciendas provide additional options for travelers looking to maximize their outdoor time. All five of the Hacienda properties that are part of Marriott International’s Luxury Collection offer some type of outdoor shower. At Hacienda Santa Rosa, an outdoor shower sits in the shade of an alamo tree that grows among the walls of the property, while at Hacienda San Jose, the bathroom is technically indoors, but the ceiba tree growing inside provides a feeling of being with nature.
