Easy Cloud Dough Recipe

This cloud dough (aka moon dough) recipe to make with the kids! You only need 2 ingredients and most are probably already sitting in your pantry right now!

Moon dough or cloud dough? Or maybe it’s moon sand? What do and your kids call this recipe? I’ve heard it called both and I suppose it doesn’t really matter.

Whatever you call this cloud dough (or is it moon dough – ha), it is super easy to make with the kids and will provide hours of enjoyment! I bet you have all of the ingredients right now to make it too. It really only takes 2 ingredients, but there is an optional ingredient if you want the dough to have a fragrance.

Recipe for Cloud Dough

There are a few recipes to make cloud dough, but this recipe covers how to make cloud dough without cornstarch. We’ve used this for for a while since I prefer to use essential oils with the baby oil instead of the alternative of conditioner and corn starch.

  • 4 cups, White Flour
  • ½ cup, Baby Oil
  • 5-7 drops, Therapeutic Grade Eucalyptus Essential Oils (optional)We used Eucalyptus Essential Oil but have also done Orange.

You can also add food coloring if you want as I’ve done for some color flecks throughout but it’s not necessary. You’ll just need a mixing bowl and spoon to get to work.

How do make Cloud Dough

  1. In your mixing bowl add the 4 cups of flour and ½ cup of baby oil. Mix well.
  2. Optional step: add 3-4 drops of each the green and orange food coloring. Knead the dough so the color disperses.
  3. Take the mixture into your hands and knead it. The heat from your hands will help form and soften it into shape.
  4. To use your moon dough, just form the dough in your hand or molds to make a variety of shapes.

Why is my cloud dough crumbly?

This is because it’s too dry. If this happens with your mixture, just add a few drops of baby oil at a time until it is the consistency you want.

How to Store Cloud Dough

Store your moon dough in an air tight container when not in use and it should stay fresh for weeks. If it lose the original consistency, just add a few more drops of baby oil and mix until softened again.

Cloud Dough Recipe with Conditioner

As I mentioned above, the alternate recipe for making cloud dough uses conditioner and cornstarch. This recipe requires:

  • 2 cups, Cornstarch
  • 1 cup, Conditioner

I would use an inexpensive conditioner that has a decent scent so it smells good. Maybe find one with lavender so there’s a calming affect for it too. Just mix together both ingredients together well in a bowl. Add the mixture into a ziploc bag to mix more with your hands. It’s ready to go!

Gingerbread Cloud Dough

If you want a cloud dough that is holiday-focused, you can adjust the essential oils and food coloring. For a Gingerbread Cloud Dough, you will need:

  • Ginger and Nutmeg Essential Oils (here and here)
  • Brown Food Coloring
