There are two things to consider when it comes to the size of your contact paper roll: ordering it and using it. With that in mind, your first priority is to measure the surface you intend to cover to get a sense of your needs. If your budget allows, we recommend ordering a bit extra to comfortably wrap edges and corners and to allow room for error.
There some common sizes for rolls of contact paper, with most brands offering widths starting in the 12- to 18-inch range, and lengths ranging from 80- to 120- inches. There are exceptions, of course, like our pick for Best Design, James & Colors Contact paper. This brand features 6- by 6-inch samples, and even small poster-sized sheets of 18- by 24-inches that are great for small crafts and DIY projects. On the other end of the scale, the largest sizes offered can rival wallpaper rolls. It’s no surprise that the largest roll we found comes from our Best Solid Color pick, Dimoon Removable Wallpaper (which can double as contact paper).

Once you have your roll and supplies and you’re ready to start covering surfaces, Maitri Mody of @honeyidressedthepug says, “Cut out the pieces of contact paper accordingly as opposed to working with a full roll.” Like wrapping a gift, you’ll likely not want the extra still attached as you’re applying it to surfaces.
The majority of contact paper is made with vinyl, a synthetic material that’s technically a type of plastic. You’ll find one adhesive side, and one decorative side. And when we say “decorative,” we mean decorative. The sky’s the limit when it comes to colors and patterns, with brands and independent sellers offering thousands of choices, and many through major online retailers.

To help you decide, Mody says, “Always get one roll [or] sample before you order the whole quantity, this way you can ensure that the color matches the photo if you are ordering online, and you can also test it out to make sure that it works for your needs.” The one exception we’ve seen to this recommendation is our Best Solid Color pick, Dimoon Removable Wallpaper, which the seller recommends bulk ordering to ensure colors are consistent.
When applied and used properly, you can expect most contact paper to be a durable cover to the busiest corners of your home—but it’s always good to double-check before completing your contact paper project. “I also always test a small patch on the surface I want to cover and leave it on for a day or two and then remove and see if it comes off easily without damaging the surface,” says Mody. If the contact paper suits your needs, an efficient and careful application will help with ensure its longevity. Follow manufacturer guidelines closely and cautiously. Most will require a smooth and dry surface, and will recommend that you work slowly and carefully, peeling small sections of adhesive at a time. You’ll also want a ruler or similar tool to smooth bubbles and bumps.
