How Much Does A Kitchen Island Cost?

How much do kitchen islands cost? Anywhere from $2,300 to $7,450 for the island itself, but you’ll also need to budget for labor and, sometimes, permits. Let’s break down the costs below.

Materials

The main cost associated with a kitchen island is the island itself. Depending on the island you purchase, you could spend anywhere from $100 to $10,000.

The higher the cost of the island, the more likely you’ll need to budget more for labor, as well, since more extravagant islands typically have more features that require plumbing, electrical, HVAC, flooring repair and even custom cabinetry and countertop installation.

Labor

For most kitchen island installs, you should hire a kitchen remodeling contractor or general contractor. Expect to pay between $500 and $1,000 for a day of labor. For a standard island installation—no cooktop, electrical or sink—this is all you’ll need.

But if you purchase a custom kitchen island that requires specialized services (plumbing, electrical and HVAC), you’ll need to hire additional pros or get a general contractor to subcontract those jobs out.

Plumbing

Plumbers cost between $50 and $200 per hour. When installing an island, you may need a plumber to hook up a sink or gas cooktop.

Your general contractor can subcontract the work out to a plumber they often work with, or you can get quotes from some of the best plumbers near you and go with the lowest bid, as long as you’ve done your due diligence to make sure they’re a good fit for the job.

Ventilation

If you install a cooktop on your island, you’ll also need to budget for the cost of range hood installation ($750 on average). Depending on the type of range hood you buy and whether your kitchen is already outfitted with ductwork, you may need to hire an HVAC contractor to properly vent the system out of the house.

Electrical

If you’re installing an electric cooktop or garbage disposal, you’ll need to hire an electrician to handle the work. Even if you’re not installing electrical appliances, you may want to add outlets or wireless charging to your island for added convenience—in either case, work with an electrician to get the work done. An electrician costs between $50 and $150 an hour.

Bonus: If you already have an electrician onsite, you might as well have them install a new eye-catching lighting fixture above the island as a focal point of your kitchen. Alternatively, you might want to have the electrician install recessed lighting throughout the kitchen if you don’t already have it. Recessed lighting installation costs between $100 and $500.

Countertops and Cabinets

When you buy a prefab island, it comes equipped with standard countertops and cabinets. But when you customize your kitchen island, you may be able to choose from custom cabinets and more elegant countertops. This can add elegance to your space, but you’ll need to budget for the installation.

Labor for countertop installation costs between $15 and $25 per square foot. The labor cost for installing kitchen cabinets goes from $40 to $100 per hour.

Flooring

Kitchen remodelers may repair the flooring after installing the island and should include it in their estimate, if so. However, you may need to hire a flooring contractor if the installation requires larger demolition to the existing flooring.

Depending on the size of the kitchen island (and your budget), it may make sense to install all-new kitchen flooring at the same time. Flooring installation costs between $1,500 and $4,500—and the best kitchen flooring types include hardwood, tile and vinyl.

Permits

Some elements of a kitchen renovation may require certain building and construction permits, particularly for demo, plumbing and electrical. Check with your local guidelines or ask your contractor which permits you need. While minor in the grand scheme of things, permits can still impact the overall cost of a kitchen remodel.
