Revamp Your Car Interior: How to Make Your Own Car Air Freshener

Sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Every one of our senses impacts the way we function, see the world, and feel on a day to day basis.

Arguably, smell is often considered the most indirect yet powerful of all senses, with a close connection to the emotional and memory regions of the brain. As a result, unexpected or unpleasant smells can negatively impact mood and concentration. On the contrary, pleasant smelling environments can have the opposite and even beneficial effects.

Within the 92.5% of Australian households that own a car, the average vehicle travels approximately 13,301km per year or 36.4km per day. As a result, we end up spending a lot of time in our cars, and statistically, 4.3 years of our life.

Not only do we spend extensive periods in our vehicles, but we also spend a relatively large amount of money on acquiring and maintaining them. So, much like the way we acquire perfumes, colognes, and diffusers to make ourselves and our homes smell nice, air fresheners are the perfect addition to continue satisfying our sense of smell.

While you can purchase air fresheners from many different retailers, making your own is a fun, sustainable and economical DIY option. Often all these DIY fresheners require are essential oils and minimal household ingredients and can be customised to your choice and displayed just like a store-bought freshener.

Benefits of Air Fresheners

Besides satisfying your sense of smell, car air fresheners have additional benefits to optimise your experience on the roads.

Neutralise odours

Vehicles are vessels for heavy traffic, and not just the traffic on the road. Passengers, you as the driver, and any external objects that make their way into any element of your vehicle can be the culprits for any unwelcome odours.

A car air freshener can help create a subtle calming ambience in your car and detract from any scents from daily vehicle use.

Refresh

With a subtle air freshener in your vehicle, the atmosphere will be ever so slightly more comfortable, making you feel more fresh and lively without blatant stimulants. It is not only you as the driver that will feel more comfortable, but any passengers are bound to feel much more pleasant surrounded by a desirable scent.

Mood

Not only will you feel more refreshed, but studies have also shown that your mood is likely to be positively impacted by a pleasant scent. In addition, driving can be stressful, especially if you are stuck in traffic or rushed for time, and having a delightfully scented air freshener can help alleviate some of these stressors.

Disinfectant properties

While air fresheners certainly won’t clean your car for you, they are known to eliminate airborne pathogens that float through the interior of your vehicle. In addition, any external road pollution can contaminate the air quality within your car, and an air freshener can be a great way to make the entire drive a more comfortable experience.

Make your Own Air Freshener

Mason jar freshener

Despite being simple glass jars, mason jars have become trending decor items for their petit, practical, and nostalgic design. Unsurprisingly, their multitude of uses includes a practical car air freshener.

Materials:

  • Half-pint mason jar
  • Baking soda
  • Essential oils
  • Piece of cardboard
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Thumbtack/push pin

Directions:

  1. Fill your mason jar two-thirds full with baking soda, and add about 20 drops of your preferred essential oil: Lemon, lavender and peppermint and popular, pleasant, and refreshing scents.
  2. Place on the lid and shake the jar well to distribute the oil among the baking soda properly.
  3. Remove the lid and use it to trace and cut a circle out of the piece of cardboard.
  4. Place the cardboard circle on top of the jar.
  5. Use the lid’s ring to secure the cardboard to the jar, and use the tack to post several holes in the cardboard lid.
  6. Place the jar in your car’s cup holder or under a seat, and replace the baking soda/oil mixture once a month.
  7. Felt and essential oil air freshener
  8. Get creative with this DIY freshener and create your own unique design and shape to hang from your rearview mirror.

Materials:

  • Adhesive craft foam
  • Craft felt
  • Essential oils
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors
  • String, ribbon or twine

Directions:

  1. Decide on a shape for your air freshener. You can get creative!
  2. Cut out your design on the craft foam and felt.
  3. Peel the adhesive backing off the foam and stick it to the felt piece.
  4. Attach a piece of string, twine or ribbon to the top to hang the freshener.
  5. Add a few drops of essential oil directly to the felt, or use a small spray bottle for a more even distribution of oils.

Felt and herbs air freshener

There is nothing quite as refreshing as the scent and aroma of fresh herbs, making this DIY freshener the perfect way to bring the sweeter side of nature’s aroma into your vehicle.

Materials:

  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Needle and thread
  • Yarn or string
  • Herbs (lavender, chamomile, mint, rosemary)

Directions:

  1. Decide on a creative shape for your air freshener.
  2. Cut out two identical shapes with the felt.
  3. Sew the two shapes together, leaving a small hole large enough to insert herbs.
  4. Insert the herbs of your choice and sew the hole together. Lavender, chamomile, mint, and rosemary are popular and pleasant choices, but choose your favourite!
  5. Use a hole punch to make a hole at the top. Then thread a piece of yarn or string through to hang in your vehicle.

Clothes Peg Air Freshener

This is the perfect DIY option if you have minimal materials available and are after a quick and simple way to freshen up your vehicle.

Materials:

  • Small clothes peg/clothespin
  • Essential oils

Directions:

  • Place 5-10 drops of essential oils onto the clothespin.
  • Clip the peg onto the air vent in your vehicle.
  • Enjoy! It’s as simple as that.
