This DIY hair oil uses a combination of carrier and essential oils you can pick for your hair type to achieve major growth.

Looking for a way to achieve major hair growth? I was desperate to grow out my short, thin hair over a decade ago. That’s when I discovered the magic of DIY hair oil and how to properly apply it.

This oil will help nourish your scalp and promote healthy hair growth. Not to mention, it’s so easy to make and only requires a few simple ingredients you can likely find at your grocery store. Read on to find out how to make your own personalized hair growth elixir!

How Do I Make My Own Hair Oil?

You’re going to pick a few oils from the list below based on your hair type and goals. Then you simply mix, apply and shower! It’s one of the easiest things to incorporate into your shower routine.

You’ve heard the phrase “less is more,” right? Adding a small amount of homemade hair oil that has the right carrier and essential oils to your hair before every shower can leave you feeling the benefits of a fresh oil treatment every day of the week!

The amazing thing about creating the best oil mixture for hair growth and thickness is its versatility. You can change the ingredients however you like based on your hair type.

One common theme among the natural beauty community is the option to change and alter DIY recipes based on your needs. Or you can create your own recipes!

In my case, I have very fine hair, and not very much of it. So I want something that’s extremely lightweight and absorbs quickly.

Because of this, I use almond or jojoba oil as a base. They’re both very light oils that are high in nutrients, and don’t leave a thick greasy feeling on my hair.

I would never use something like castor oil, which is one of the thickest oils out there! I would advise you to use castor oil only if you have severely dry, damaged hair or African American hair.

In addition to a good oil base that fits your hair type, I would use essential oils for an extra boost, especially if you plan on massaging your DIY hair growth oil into your scalp. Essential oils can heal or soothe your scalp while stimulating that sought-after growth.

All you need are one or two of the carrier oils I’ve got down below, with the option to add extra essential oils to boost your hair or scalp’s health for the perfect hair oil blend.

Depending on your hair type and your goals, you can put this on your ends, scalp, or both. You can mix and match these options for maximum results!

The Best Essential Oils for Hair Growth and Thickness!

If you’re new to essential oils, my absolute favorite place to get them is REVIVE Essential Oils. They have some of the best prices I’ve come across, but they don’t skimp on quality whatsoever.

REVIVE is a non-MLM company, which means that you won’t deal with pushy salespeople determined to make their next sale. You can buy exactly what you need while supporting indigenous harvested essential oil practices!

My REVIVE Essential Oils review goes into all the details on what makes them different from other companies. You can get almost all of the oils mentioned in this post straight from their website!

I truly didn’t know what good quality essential oils smelled like until I switched to this company. And I know that they are all 100% pure and unadulterated.

And what’s more, you can get 10% off your first order if you use the code ESSENTIAL10 at checkout! Or get 15% off orders of $100 or more 🙂

Start with Nourishing Carrier Oils as a Base:

  • Rosehip Oil—It’s light, it’s full of essential vitamins and antioxidants for your scalp, and it’s super moisturizing for your ends! I recently discovered the magic of rosehip oil and I wish I had found it sooner.

I’ve got a full article on how to use rosehip oil for hair growth. But this would make a fantastic base for a quick hair oil treatment.

  • Coconut oil—Homemade hair oil with coconut oil is one of the best options for healthy hair and rapid growth. This magical oil penetrates deep into the hair shaft the longer you leave it in.

I would recommend this oil to just about any hair type. However, it is slightly on the heavier side. So, if you have fine hair like me, there’s better options. I personally stopped using it on my hair a couple years ago.

  • Jojoba oil—This oil is very similar to the sebum secreted from your scalp. Your roots don’t get greasy just to ruin your day; that oil is one of the best things for your hair! It can actually teach your scalp to produce less oil.
  • Argan oil—A tried and true favorite of mine that I use to moisturize and revive my nails, skin, and hair! If you are prone to frizz or fly-aways, Argan oil is an absolute must for DIY hair oil for frizzy hair.

When I first tried regularly oiling my hair before each shower, I put straight Argan oil on my ends with fantastic results. It makes a great facial moisturizer too!

  • Almond Oil—It’s density is much lighter than the average oil, but with the same moisturizing benefits. If you have thin or dry hair like myself, this is an excellent option.

The essential fatty acids in the oil are great for adding thickness to your ends. Or you can add it to your concoction for an extra moisture boost without the worry of weighing down your hair.

  • Castor Oil—You can create your own castor oil hair growth recipe by using this as a base with another carrier oil to help dilute it. Like I said before, I strongly recommend against using straight castor oil on your hair.

Unless your hair is extremely dry, damaged, and thick, I would steer clear. I tried using it on my thin hair when I didn’t know better and my hair felt weighed-down for almost a week. Even after washing several times!

Don’t get me wrong, castor oil is a great option for DIY hair oil for dry hair! I think you could get away with using it if you have very thick hair and dilute it with a carrier oil.

Then Add Essential Oils for Hair Growth

  • Tea tree oil—A good option if you plan to apply your mixture to your scalp to help with dandruff or irritation. It can even help you go longer between washes. Just put a few drops into your base oil and you’re good to go!
  • Rosemary Essential Oil—This is an excellent option for hair growth because of the invigorating effects. Rosemary essential oil can even help regrow hair! Just make sure that you always dilute it with your carrier oil to avoid essential oil irritation.
  • Cedarwood—A great option for hair growth while clarifying and calming an irritated scalp. Cedarwood is invigorating enough to stimulate hair growth without being overwhelming.
  • Lavender—One of my favorites! Lavender invigorates the scalp, calms inflammation, and even moisturizes. I love using it on everything from acne to sunburn treatments.
  • Peppermint—A great option for stimulating hair growth and calming inflammation. Just be careful that you don’t use too much, because the cooling effect can be overwhelming to those who have never used it.
  • Chamomile—It makes more than a great tea! Chamomile essential oil also calms an irritated scalp while providing a good amount of moisture. An excellent option for those with a dry, itchy, or flaky scalp!

In addition, there are countless more essential oils you can add if you plan to use it on your scalp for hair growth. There’s really no wrong answer to this, so you can choose the one that smells the best, or whatever else you like!

REVIVE has an oil for just about every need you can think of, from skin and hair issues to a quick emotional boost. And remember, you can always get 10% off your first order if you use the code ESSENTIAL10 🙂

How Can I Mix Hair Oil at Home?

Combine your base oil(s) with 5-10 drops of any desired essential oils in a dark glass bottle of your choice. Make sure to keep it in a safe, dry place.

If you can’t get a hold of dark glass bottles, plastic is fine. Just make sure you keep it away from regular sunlight exposure.

Essential oils are best stored without any light because they can go bad faster with light exposure. I would try to stay away from brands that don’t use dark glass bottles in their packaging. REVIVE always uses dark amber glass bottles for their oils!

If you are using more than one carrier oil, just use a 1:1 ratio. There’s no need for any specific measurements. I prefer to use one part jojoba oil and one part almond oil for my base, and add about 10 drops each of rosemary and lavender essential oil.

How to Apply Homemade Hair Growth Oil

At least one hour before your shower, apply a small amount of your DIY hair oil to your ends and/or scalp. You want your hair to be oily, but not completely saturated. This is key! The same goes for massaging it into your scalp with your fingertips.

Run a brush or comb that you don’t mind getting full of oils through your hair. This will help evenly distribute the oils down your hair shaft. I recommend tying your hair up so it’s out of the way, then go about your morning for the next hour or so. The minimum amount of time for your hair to absorb the oil is 20 minutes.

If you shower in the morning, you can apply the oil the night before. The reason for the long amount of time is to allow the oil to soak in your hair and work its magic.

You can put on a special hair protection cap so you don’t get your pillowcase soaked in oils. But if you only have 20 minutes to spare before your shower, no worries!

Rinsing Out Your Homemade Hair Oil

When it’s time to shower, just take down your hair and hop in. Your regular shower and conditioner routine will get the oil out just fine.

I want to emphasize here that you do not need to shampoo your ends, although I’ve had different results depending on what shampoo I’m using. So don’t be afraid to experiment on a day when you don’t need to be anywhere to figure out how much oil your shampoo will remove.

If you make your own shampoo, such as a diluted baking soda rinse, this oil routine is not for you. Any hair care routine that doesn’t involve some kind of soap cannot have oils in it. I actually don’t recommend using baking soda shampoo regularlyat all.

Final Thoughts On Homemade Oil for Hair Growth and Thickness

Go about the rest of your shower routine and you’ll have soft, luxurious hair all day every day with this DIY hair oil! You can go longer between haircuts and enjoy a healthier scalp with faster growth.

Using this before every shower (or every three days) was a major game changer when I was trying to grow out my hair. Even if you don’t live a chemical-free lifestyle, everyone who is passionate about the health of their hair should do this.

Less oil more frequently is one of my best-kept hair growth secrets, and I’m happy to have shared it. Believe it or not, the oil from your scalp is actually good for your hair!
