What Essential Oils are Good for Pain and Inflammation?

At some point in our lives, we’re going to experience pain and inflammation; whether it be acute pain from a tough workout, a physically demanding job, an injury, or ongoing pain from chronic conditions. And that pain can be debilitating.

Thankfully, you can skip the drugstore medications that often have side effects – and opt for a natural option to relieve pain with essential oils instead. Several essential oils are proven pain relievers, including muscle pain and lower back pain.

Top essential oils for pain and inflammation include:

  • Lavender oil
  • Eucalyptus oil

For this essential oil recipe for pain and inflammation, I chose three common essential oils (peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender) as you probably already have them in your medicine cabinet. And they’re budget-friendly oils that almost every beginner will have since they’re often sold together in starter kits.

After all, when you’re in pain, who wants to go out shopping or wait for an order to arrive? You want relief right now…and this is what a homemade essential oil blend provides. Plus, it works for a variety of pain, including general muscle pain, strains, sprains, and even pesky tension knots. Furthermore, it gets right to the root of things by relieving the inflammation that often accompanies pain.

All in all, this essential oil recipe for pain and inflammation is a great go-to-home remedy to begin using at the first sign of pain and inflammation. With its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, this DIY essential oil blend can be a useful addition to your pain management regime.

How to Make Essential Oil for Pain and Inflammation

All you need to do is gather three ingredients, and you’re halfway to making an essential oil recipe for pain and inflammation in just five minutes!

Tools

  • Five ml amber glass essential oil bottle: You will be using this bottle to mix and store your essential oils to reduce inflammation. The bottle is amber in color because it protects your essential oils from UV damage, thereby increasing the shelf life of your essential oils.
  • Mini funnel, optional:Using a mini funnel prevents your precious essential oils from spilling when you pour them into the amber glass essential oil bottle.

Materials

  • Peppermint essential oil -Peppermint essential oil has cooling properties from menthol which helps soothe sore muscles (works even better than ice!). Peppermint essential oil also has anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties. If you don’t have peppermint essential oil, you can use spearmint essential oil instead.
  • Eucalyptus essential oil -Eucalyptus essential oil is an effective essential oil for reducing inflammation, pain, and swelling. If you don’t have eucalyptus essential oil, you can use tea tree essential oil instead.
  • Lavender essential oilIn addition to having anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties, lavender essential oil has a calming effect. If you don’t have lavender essential oil, you can replace it with Clary sage essential oil instead.

Wondering where to find these essential oils? You can find them at natural health food markets. Or, to save time, you can shop for them online using the affiliate links I provided above for your convenience.

Step-By-Step Directions

Follow these simple directions, and you can’t go wrong!

In order to make this essential oil recipe for pain and inflammation, start by removing the dropper cap from a clean essential oil bottle. You can do this by wedging your fingernail under the plastic reducer and pulling upward.

Next, using a mini funnel to avoid spills, carefully add all of the essential oils for pain and inflammation to a five ml bottle. Make sure you swirl the bottle gently after each addition to combine well.

Then, replace the dropper top and screw on the lid. Mix well with a few vigorous shakes. Use immediately or store out of direct sunlight so your essential oils don’t deteriorate. The fragrance will continue to develop as the oils meld over time.

How to Use Essential Oils for Pain

Aromatherapy for pain relief can take so many forms. You can use an essential oil diffuser to diffuse your essential oils for pain and inflammation, or you can inhale them. You can even apply the essential oil recipe for pain diluted onto painful areas directly.

Or you can add it to roll-on bottles. Finally, you can incorporate essential oils into various products, including lotions, creams, and massage oils. This works wonders as a homemade massage oil for joint pain or a massage oil for back pain.

Homemade Massage Oil

Make a homemade massage oil by diluting approximately ten drops of the essential oil recipe with one tablespoon of carrier oil such as olive oil or jojoba oil. If you prefer a thicker consistency, you can use coconut oil instead.

Before using the massage oil, it’s best to perform a skin patch test, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Just apply a tiny amount of massage oil to your inner arm and wait 24 hours to check for any allergic reactions such as itching, swelling, or a rash. This recipe will yield ten applications i.e. ten doses.

Roll-on

To use as a roll-on, fill a bottle with a carrier oil and add about 20 drops of the essential oil recipe. Then, place the roller ball top on the bottle and roll it between your hands for about half a minute so that the essential oils and carrier oil mix well. Apply as needed. This recipe will yield five bottlefuls.

Diffusion

Add five drops of essential oil per 100mL of water to your diffuser. Set the diffuser on and let it fill the space with fresh aroma-infused air.

Inhalation

Place ten drops of the essential oil recipe in a bowl of hot water. Lean your head over the bowl, and drape a towel big enough to cover your head and the bowl together. Take deep breaths and inhale the steam rising up from the bowl. This recipe will yield ten applications.

Add to a Bath

Place 20 drops of the essential oil recipe in your bath water. Stir the water gently with your hand, then submerge your body for a nice soak. This recipe will yield five applications.

Adding bubble bath power or DIY bath confetti are other ways to enhance your bath and create a deeply relaxing experience.

NOTE: Remember that these amounts are just approximations. It’s always best to start with weak dilutions and add more essential oil if needed.
