Like many Caribbean islands have their own drink, most restaurants on Pensacola Beach have their own signature drink. We all know the Bushwhacker is THE drink of Pensacola Beach and that the Sandshaker Lounge claims it as their signature drink. According to the Sandshaker, a previous owner brought the Bushwhacker to the Sandshaker and to Pensacola Beach back in 1975.
While there are many places to grab the delicious “adult milkshake,” we will save for another day the debate on where to get the best Bushwacker because there’s many other signature drinks on the beach to enjoy. We bring you five of the best, including some original drinks created by the restaurants, or their own version of a classic.
You are watching: Get rum punch wrecked, waste away in Margaritaville or fuel up on Diesel Fuel
Drink: The Shipwreck
Cost: $9.50, keep the souvenir cup and refills are $8.50
Located: 1010 Fort Pickens Road, Pensacola Beach.
Tastes like: A sweet, fruity, island rum drink.
Peg Leg’s has served The Shipwreck since opening in 1991. The name denotes the strength of this drink. It has coconut rum, spiced rum and 151 rum mixed with fruit juices (OJ & pineapple), sprite and grenadine. This is a beachy rum drink that is refreshing and hydrating and perfect to drink while hanging by the water. You definitely taste the coconut and the pineapple. You might want to have some grouper nuggets, or even a good ol’ burger, while drinking this one because it packs a punch while spiking the blood sugar.
Drink: The Grand Marlin
Cost: $8.50

Located: 400 Pensacola Beach Blvd., Pensacola Beach.
Tastes like: Rum punch with a little spice and a toasty caramel flavor.
The Grand Marlin’s drink is named for itself. While it is rum mixed with fruit juices, this one is pretty smooth. They take banana rum, coconut rum, mango rum and pineapple rum and mix them with OJ, pineapple juice and cranberry and then add a Cruzan Black Strap Rum floater on top. Belly up to the outside bar, order The Grand Marlin, and mix that floater in and enjoy the scenery. Need something to snack on – the Lobster Fingers are a must.
Drink: The Original Margarita
Cost: $8.00
Located: 165 Fort Pickens Road., Pensacola Beach.
Tastes like: A margarita!
Not surprisingly, the signature drink of Margaritaville is, yep – you guessed it, a margarita. But, these days it is hard to find a good margarita that is not made with neon, lime green mix. The Original Margarita is the real deal. This place hand squeezes buckets of limes every morning. Mix that fresh lime juice with orange liqueur, top shelf tequila and a little simple syrup and you get a margarita that reminds you why you ever liked margaritas in the first place. It’s not too sweet and it’s not too tart. Nick is one of the bartenders and has been there for five years and crafted this classic drink. He can often be found working the Tiki Hut bar outside by the pool. Sadly you cannot go out there unless you are a guest of the hotel. But, the indoor bar and restaurant will take care of you. If you need some food to soak up the alcohol, order the Lava Lava Shrimp. Or, after two or three margaritas the ladies won’t care about carbs or calories and will devour the Seafood Mac & Cheese.
Drink: Mojito

Cost: $7.95
Located: 400 Quietwater Beach Road., Pensacola Beach.
Tastes Like: A cool, refreshing blend of lime and mint.
Hemingway’s is a casual island/Cuban restaurant with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. To compliment the Cuban theme, their signature drink is the Mojito. They set their popular island drink apart by always making them by hand with fresh ingredients. They also use pure cane sugar instead of the usual simple syrup and they muddle fresh mint and limes and mix with soda water and rum. This mojito tastes mighty refreshing with a touch of sweetness. You could happily enjoy a few of these while sitting on the deck watching the ever-present wedding happening downstairs on Hemingway’s beach. If you really want to get into the Earnest Hemingway theme, they also have the Papa Doble Daiquiri – which actually isn’t a daiquiri. It’s got a double shot of Bacardi rum with lime, grapefruit and Maraschino. That one probably isn’t for everybody. There are plenty of food options for soaking up the rum here, but the Wild Mushroom Flatbread is always a good bet.
Drink: Diesel Fuel
Cost: $10.00
Located: 800 Quietwater Beach Road., Pensacola Beach.
Tastes like: Coca Cola and Sprite mixed.
The Diesel Fuel at Flounders has been around a long time, since they opened in 1980. It is basically a double Long Island Ice Tea. It’s the Long Island Ice Tea’s bigger, stronger brother that you are a little afraid of. There are double shots of gin, rum, vodka and triple sec mixed with Coca Cola and sour mix. This thing is so potent they limit two per customer. And that’s a good thing because you really can’t taste all of that alcohol in there. They have added other flavors over the years – including a Turbo that is made with a can of Red Bull and will land you in the back of a cop car. This long-running drink has always come in a large Mason jar – used to be glass but now they serve them in plastic. Tip – you can ask for a souvenir glass one to take home, no extra charge. Although it is the bartender’s discretion if they refuse you the glass jar out of concern it’ll end up on the beach or over someone’s head. There are plenty of food options to soak up the diesel and keep you on track – Seafood Nachos are always a good bet.
