Why Is My Tap Water Foamy? – Solved

Water is a necessity, it is needed for life and is used for a variety of different things in daily life. But where does all of this water come from? Where is it stored? How does it get to your house? There can be a lot of different issues with tap water. This is why it has a negative stigma around it. There are a lot of people who outright refuse to drink tap water.

Why does my tap water come out foamy?

This is caused by the water in the pipes having more pressure than the water in the glass. When water is forced quickly through pipes it gets mixed up pretty well. This causes the water to mix with air to create bubbles. When air is forced into water it aerates it to a point where the bubbles become very small and look like foam.

Think of your local coffee shop when they force air into cream to create frothed cream. The bubbles become so small and the cream becomes so aerated it looks like foam.

Another example would be at a bar. Beer is forced into a keg and then is run through a kegerator system. This system is designed to create the perfect glass of beer with foam on top.

Is foamy tap water dangerous?

No, foamy tap water is not dangerous. It is safe to drink and is not a big issue. You can buy a new faucet to fix the problem or you can attempt to fix it yourself for free.

How to Fix Foamy tap water?

Step 1: Remove your faucet spout

Turn the cap on the top of the faucet spout housing counterclockwise with a pair of pliers. Then grasp the retaining ring and twist counterclockwise to remove it from the spout. Grab the spout and pull it off of the faucet.

Step 2: Clean the Aerator

The aerator looks like a little mesh ring that will be covering the exit to the faucet spout. This can get dirty and clogged up. Brush the aerator with anything that will get into the small holes. A wire brush works best.

Step 3: Reattach the faucet spout

Put everything back together. Then test the water to see if there is still foam. If there is still foam then the issue is coming from your pipes.

My Tap water is foamy and cloudy

Cloudy tap water is also caused by air bubbles in the water. Both foamy and cloudy tap water is safe to drink. The best solution is to let it sit in a cup and allow the bubbles to leave the water.

Tap water that is foamy and salty

If your water has a salty after taste it is not safe to drink. This can be caused by industrial waste or irrigation runoff. This can be very dangerous and you should get your water tested immediately if this is the case. The salty taste is caused by a concentrate of chloride ions or sulfates in the tap water.
