Why Does My Garbage Disposal Back Up into the Other Sink?

Published by

Having a garbage disposal back up into the other sink is more than aggravating – it is unsanitary. This is an excellent way to spread germs. There are a number of potential reasons it may be backing up, any of which American Appliance Repair can help repair.

There May Be a Clog in the Drain Line

One of the most common causes of garbage disposal backing up into another sink is a clog in the drain line. If this is the issue, then it is a fairly easy fix – you may be able to use a standard plunger to clear the drain.

Begin by filling up the other sink (not the one with the disposal) with water. Stop when there are three – four inches of water. Then plug the side with the garbage disposal. Use your plunger, put it over the plug, and try to clear the drain. If this does not work, then the clog may be too far down for a sink plunger to work. At that point, try and use a plumber’s snake to clear the clog.

There May Be an Installation Problem

If your garbage disposal was not installed correctly, then this could be the cause of it backing up into the other sink. The sink basin and your garbage disposal have separate traps. Each of them is connected to the main drain line that goes to the wall. When looked at together, they are in a y-shape.

In some cases, the garbage disposal is connected to the tailpiece of the other sink. If this is the case, then the shape will look like the letter “T.” The issue with this setup is that water can potentially be pushed into the sink opposite the disposal, which can cause a clog. There are special “T” pieces you can buy that can direct the flowing water back down. If you have clogs on a regular basis, then it is best to have a y-shaped system installed.

Preventative Measures That Can Prevent Future Blockages

Following tips to prevent your garbage disposal from backing up into the other sink is an important part of keeping your disposal in good shape. First and foremost, be sure you are only putting things down your drain and your disposal that are appropriate. Do not put coffee grounds, pasta, apple peels, and bones down your garbage disposal. Never pour grease down any drain, including a garbage disposal.

Keep your garbage disposal clean by pouring dish soap down it and running cold water for about 15 minutes. You can also grind up ice cubes every few weeks to help remove grease and other stuck-on bits from your garbage disposal blades.

It May Be Time to Replace Your Garbage Disposal

It is possible that the issue with your garbage disposal is one that cannot be repaired on your own. This may require the help of American Appliance Repair or it may require that your garbage disposal is replaced altogether. You can call us at 800-640-9934 to get started.
