Goat Milk Baby Formula {Recipe}

So you’ve begun breastfeeding and for some reason or another you need to supplement with a baby formula. Which to choose? The number of formulas out there are overwhelming! All of them state that they are “close to breast milk” but if you read the back of the can, you are still confused. Does breast milk have corn syrup solids? And what if baby cannot tolerate the formula? Enter goat milk baby formula!

Why Choose Goat Milk Baby Formula

Perhaps in talking to your grandmother, she mentioned that she, too, used a goat’s milk formula. It’s said to be as close to breast milk as you can get, and it’s easy for babies to tolerate if they cannot have cow’s milk formula.

When searching the net for information on goat’s milk and breastfeeding, I’ve gathered a lot of useful information. Of course, before feeding your baby anything other than breast milk or store bought baby formula, please consult a pediatrician!

Goat Milk Baby Formula – Sourcing the Ingredients

Goat’s milk is pretty close to breast milk until it’s diluted. This is where all the other key ingredients needed come into play. What other ingredients are needed? Well, you will need a source of fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals, and probiotics.

You want the best for your baby, so choose ingredients wisely! Use organic ingredients when possible.

First you need a can of powdered goat milk. A good source of fats would be coconut oil (the saturated fat in coconut oil is high in medium chain triglycerides and contains such important compounds as lauric acid which is found in high amounts in breast milk) and olive oil (delivers healthy monounsaturated fats). For carbohydrates I’d recommend an organic brown rice syrup – the main ingredient in breast milk is carbohydrates, so this can deliver some quick carbs!

Babies also need iron, which store bought baby formula has. Blackstrap molasses can be added for a source of iron. It also helps baby not to become constipated, which is great. (Another great thing about breast milk: the chances of baby becoming constipated are slim!) If you want to add in some probiotics, which are great for baby’s gut, I would suggest the Jarrow brand. It’s what I’ve used for my children (not bottle-fed, but I add it into their food). Jarrow makes an infant probiotic and the daily dosage is 1/4 tsp, so you can add that right into the first bottle of the day. You do not add it to each bottle. One source discussing ingredients for homemade goat’s milk formula says you can also add in a multivitamin, and the brand recommended was Country Life Maxi Baby Care as it is easily absorbed.

How to Prepare a Bottle of Goat Milk Baby Formula

Now the directions for preparing an 8 oz bottle of formula. I would suggest preparing a new bottle each time vs. making this in a big batch. It will remain fresh and it is easier to figure out the calculations to ensure baby is getting the proper nutrition.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp organic coconut oil
  • 1 tsp organic olive oil
  • 1 tbsp organic brown rice syrup
  • 1/8 tsp blackstrap molasses
  • liquid multi-vitamin dosage according to directions
  • 1 Tbsp of the powdered goats milk formula
  • 1/4 tsp infant probiotic (remember, this only goes in 1 bottle a day)

Directions:

Fill a baby bottle with 5 oz of HOT water (needed to dissolve the oils and sugars). Add in the coconut oil and swirl till it’s all melted. Add in the coconut and olive oil, molasses, brown rice syrup and multi vitamins. Shake the bottle so that the mixture is distributed and oils are melted together.

Add in the TBSP of the powdered goats milk and also add in enough COLD water until it reaches the 8 oz line on the bottle. Again, shake well.

Lastly, add in the probiotic powder, shake. Test the temperature of the bottle and feed to your baby.

Have you used a goat milk baby formula with your child? How did they tolerate it? What was your reason for using the goat milk formula?
