There’s a variety of ways you can enjoy caramel corn or caramel popcorn. We are excited to share with you one way today, that is very similar to Gordon Ramsay’s recipe. This will help you make a delicious, salted caramel corn recipe at home, and using a very simple method.
Now that your taste buds have started to water, let’s turn our attention to what you will need in order to make this delicious caramel corn recipe, as well as how to go about making it.
Popcorn Kernels. Popcorn kernels are in the un-popped popcorn that you will need in order to make is delicious homemade caramel corn recipe.
Olive oil. We recommend using olive oil, however, you may also choose to use canola oil or vegetable oil if desired. This is simply an oil that we use to cook the popcorn in and help it not stick to your pan.
Sugar. Although in some cases brown sugar is used to make caramel on your caramel corn, the specific recipe we recommend uses granulated sugar. You’ll want to cook your granulated sugar for a few minutes in the bottom of your saucepan so that it browns and becomes the basis of your caramel.
Salt. Salt is what will help to make this popcorn taste like salted caramel popcorn. You may use sea salt, kosher salt, or iodized salt if desired. The key is simply to be sure and include salt.
Butter. You want to include butter that has had a chance to soften, but it’s not melted in your caramel sauce. We recommend using salted butter, however, unsalted butter may be used if desired.
Baking Soda. Baking soda, or as Gordon Ramsay calls it bicarbonate of soda. This is used to help expand the caramel, and give it the delicious flavoring of salted caramel.
Now that you have all of your ingredients gathered, let’s look at an overview of how you can make this copycat salted caramel corn recipe from Gordon Ramsay.
First, begin by preparing your popcorn. You will start off with corn kernels, this means that you will need to pop the popcorn so that it forms…well, popcorn. To do this, you will want to drizzle the bottom of your pan with oil. As your oil heats up and begins to slightly smoke, reduce your heat and add your popcorn kernels.
Cover the pan and continue cooking the popcorn at a medium-low temperature. While your popcorn is cooking you will begin to hear a bunch of ting, ting, ting sound of your kernels hitting the lid. When that stops, remove your pan from the burner.

Your popcorn has been popped, it’s time to prepare your caramel. To do this, place your pan over medium-low heat and add your sugar. Be careful to keep your burner so that it is not high enough that your sugar will burn, instead your sugar should caramelize. As your sugar caramelizes and has turned dark, add your salt then stir to combine.
Next, add your butter carefully and stir until it is completely melted. Finally, add in your baking soda and stir to combine. Turn your burner off. Pour in your popcorn and stir to coat your popcorn in your caramel.
Once your popcorn is coated, pour your caramel corn out onto a lightly greased baking sheet so that it forms a thin layer.
Although Gordon Ramsay does not say to bake the caramel corn in the oven to help it dry, however, some recipes do instruct you to do this. We recommend, if your caramel corn is very sticky and dry, you can preheat your oven to 200°F, and allow your caramel corn to bake for 30 minutes, then stir it, and bake for another 30 minutes. This will help to dry your caramel corn out so that it has that nice crunchy texture to it.
Once your salted caramel popcorn has finished drying, you will want to transfer it to an airtight container for storage. Store in an airtight container, at room temperature.
Determining how much popcorn per person is available can be a very difficult question. Popcorn tends to be one of the foods that are snacked on, and some people eat more than others. As a rule of thumb, typically one cup of cooked popcorn can be one serving. However, when the craving hits, you may just find yourself eating until your heart’s content.
Those of you who love the extra crunchiness of caramel corn, as well as the saltiness of salted caramel popcorn, we have a couple of recommendations for you. First, Gordon Ramsay does not necessarily recommend baking your caramel corn after it has been prepared. However, if you like the extra crunchiness, you may most definitely bake your finished caramel corn at 200°F until it has hardened. Typically, this process takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour, or as long as two hours.
If you love the extra saltiness, we also recommend that you sprinkle large chunks of sea salt on top of your finished popcorn. This will help to give you the extra kick of delicious saltiness.
You can make popcorn using a pan on your stovetop, there are a couple of other ways you can make popcorn as well. One way is to use an air popper to pop your popcorn for salted caramel popcorn. Using an air popper works out quite well, as it highly reduces the number of kernels you may find in your popcorn.
Another way you can make popcorn is my personal favorite. That is to use a Whirley pop on your stovetop to pop your popcorn. Using a Whirley pop, allows you to evenly cook your popcorn, and prevent you from burning it. Overall, you got a nice result in your popcorn using a Whirley pop which is why it’s one of my favorites.
I don’t know about you, but my taste buds are watering. Let’s get to making this delicious salted caramel popcorn!
½ cup popcorn kernels

2 tsp salt

1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
1 heaping tsp baking soda
To start, place your pan over medium-low heat, and address of oil to the bottom of the pan. Allow for your pan and oil to heat before adding your popcorn kernels in. Add your popcorn kernels and cover the pan. Continue cooking over medium-low heat, as you begin to hear your popcorn kernels popping. When the kernels have finished popping, remove your pan from the heat.
In a separate saucepan, add your granulated sugar, and place over medium low heat. Allow for the granulated sugar to caramelize.
When you begin to see the sugar caramelized, and turn a lovely golden color, add salt and stir.
Next, add your butter to the pan, and stir as the butter melts. Once the butter melts, add your baking soda, turn the heat off of your burner, and stir your mixture until combined.
Pour your popcorn into the pan with your caramel sauce and stir until your popcorn is coated. Turn your caramel-covered popcorn onto a lightly greased baking pan and allow it to cool. Once cool, your caramel should be hardened.
This step is optional. If your caramel corn has not hardened after it cools, preheat your oven to 200°F, and place your caramel corn on the baking sheet into your oven. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and stir. If your caramel corn is still not hard, continue baking for another 30 minutes.
Once your caramel corn has hardened, allow for it to fully cool, then serve and enjoy.
Please note that as an optional addition, you may sprinkle your finished caramel corn with large flakes of sea salt for added salty deliciousness.
