Homemade dryer sheets are gentle on your clothes and your budget.
What could be easier than grabbing a store-bought dryer sheet, popping it in with your damp clothes, and letting it do its thing? Unfortunately, “doing its thing” in this case means wasting your money.

The solution to these issues is making your own dryer sheets. It’s easy, and it saves money. Depending on which of the methods below that you use, it may reduce your allergy or skin issues, too.
It is important to use a jar or container with a non-metallic lid, or you’ll wind up with rust on your homemade dryer sheets which can stain on your clothes. Also, use a white, lint-free fabric like old t-shirts or sheets so they do not leave lint, clothing pills, or dyes on your clothing.
Vinegar is a fantastic laundry aid. Although it smells strong in the bottle, the odor disappears as it dries. To make dryer sheets with it, fill the container with white vinegar and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Stuff the fabric squares into the container and shake to saturate them. To use, grab a wet square and add it to the dryer with your clothes. You can reuse the same sheets multiple times, just put them back in the container. Add more vinegar and essential oils as needed to keep the jar topped off.

If you are laundering pet bedding, either skip the dryer sheets or choose essential oils that are safe to use around animals.
This recipe makes a scented DIY dryer sheet. To use it, shake together 3 parts of hair conditioner with 1 part of white vinegar in the container. Add the fabric squares and shake again to saturate them. Then remove the squares from the mixture, wring them out, and let them air dry. Wash and dry the container. Store the dry squares in the clean container. To use, toss a square into the dryer with your clothes. To reuse them, wash and dry the squares, then repeat the recipe.
This recipe does not avoid the fatty substances of commercial dryer sheets, but it saves money. For these homemade dryer sheets, put the squares of fabric into the container and pour in 1 cup of liquid fabric softener. Add the lid and shake the container vigorously to saturate the fabric. Remove the squares one at a time, squeeze out the excess moisture, and let them air dry. Wash and dry the container. Store the DIY dryer sheets in the clean container and add one to the dryer with your clothing. To reuse, wash and dry the squares, then repeat the recipe.
