Want to make your own easy Homemade Shaving Cream that you can whip up anytime you run out? You only need 3 ingredients and a few minutes to put together this recipe!
It feels like forever since I wrote down the note on my idea board: “Homemade Shave Cream”. I think for some reason I was thinking it would be difficult to make or require something I didn’t have on hand. Turns out that neither of those things was true, and I’m glad I finally took the plunge!
This recipe for easy Homemade Shaving Cream alternative is so simple to make and leaves your skin silky smooth and full of moisture. No more irritation or razor burn that is common on sensitive skin!
You can add essential oils to give it a little scent or just leave it unscented for those with fragrance issues.
What You Need:
The ingredients! I order shea butter in bulk, buy my olive oil in bulk, and order coconut oil from Azure Standard. (I used to order from Tropical Traditions as seen in the pic, but found a better price from Azure.)
You can read all about coconut oil and why it’s important to buy a good brand on my Coconut Oil Lotion post. Let’s talk for a minute about Shea Butter though….

Just like with coconut oil, with Shea Butter you want to pick a good unrefined, unprocessed kind. You can choose between ivory and gold shea butters.
One is not better than the other, but I prefer the different colors for different things. (I can usually get gold shea butter for less than ivory so I mostly stick with that, but ivory shea butter is good for things like Diaper Rash Cream because it’s less likely to stain.) **Note that shea butter does not smell like the “shea butter lotions” that come from the store, it has a very earthy smell which is normal.
There are so many uses for shea butter that it’s worth keeping on hand. If stored in a cool dark place, shea butter will stay good for over a year.
Start by melting the shea butter and the coconut oil on a low heat on the stove top. It doesn’t take very long to melt.
Once it’s melted, pour into a container and add in the olive oil and stir. Set this mixture in the fridge and let it harden.
Once it’s solid again you can take it out of the fridge and put it into a bowl that you can whip it in. It kinda looks like a block of butter, doesn’t it?
Whip it! I did this for about 3 minutes with a hand mixer or you can do it until it’s light and creamy.
Add in essential oils here if you wish. Lavender or peppermint are a good fit but you can try any essential oil of your choice as long as you don’t have a sensitivity and as long as it’s not phototoxic (like lemon oil).
Isn’t it beautiful? Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark area when not in use.
Follow up your shave with a good Homemade Aftershave Lotion.
Use this homemade shaving cream the same as you would any store-bought shaving cream! This could be used for shaving for men or women. I’m so glad I finally worked up a recipe for this and that it’s so effective.
