So, suddenly there is no hot water coming out of your faucet – this can be your worst nightmare, right? But before you are overcome with stress, ask yourself what could be the causes for this dilemma.

Usually there are two main causes: The water is sputtering out of the faucet, possibly because an airlock has been created that is preventing the hot water from flowing out of the tap, or there is a problem with your water heater. Usually this is no big deal and there are easy fixes to get the hot water up and running again. Let us take a more in-depth look at the situation why your faucet may not be releasing hot water.

Why is No Water Coming from Faucet?

Disconnected Boiler

First, check for obvious causes. Before you do anything, make sure that the boiler or water heater is running correctly and if the water supply is on. The gas or electric boiler in your house may be disconnected from the power supply and without a power connection, there will be no hot water. The gas or electric boiler may have also been switched off. In that case, you can reset the boiler if there is a reset switch on the system.

Only Cold Water

If there is only cold water, it is possible that the thermostat is on the wrong setting.

Is the Problem with the Hot or Cold Water?

  1. If the problem is only with one faucet then it may be clogged. Is hot water coming from the other faucets in your home? If it isn’t you might need the help of a plumber to fix.
  2. If there is only cold water coming from the tap, it is likely your water heater, especially if the cold side is working fine. There are various reasons why water heaters do not heat properly. It may be due to a leak, a build-up of sediment or it could have become unplugged. Try to fix it by flushing the water heater. Allow it to heat up again and try using the faucet once more to see if the water comes out.

Harsh Winter

Some places have harsh winters and frozen pipes can lead to no running water. If you get lukewarm water (thus not hot or cold), this could be the issue. The pipes must gradually warm up before hot water will release from the faucet. You can use a hairdryer to unfreeze the pipes more quickly.

A Problem with Valves

  1. If there is no problem with the heater, but there is just no hot water coming from the tap, the diverter valve may be at fault. The diverter valve enables a boiler to switch between heating different things in your house. If the heat is working and the hot water is not, it may be the valve that is at fault. It could be stuck, broken or detached.
  2. The water valve may also be turned off which will cause the hot water to get blocked as the valve controls water flow.

Blocked or Clogged

  1. Airlocks in pipes cause air to become trapped in the water pipes causing partial or total water blockages. You can try to use a hosepipe on the cold water tap and connect it to the hot water tap. First, turn on the hot water tap to the fullest. The pressure from the cold tap may help to force out the airlock, otherwise you will need a plumber to drain the entire system.
  2. Another potential cause is blocked or leaking water pipes. Low water pressure can cause leaks.

Electrical Failure

  1. If the wrong setting has been set on the timer, the boiler may not work properly and will not heat up the water as it should.
  2. It is possible that power cuts can restart an electric boiler. When the power is on again, the boiler may reset to its default settings, causing the problem.
  3. A faulty installation can cause many problems, hence the importance of having it done properly by a professional. If not done correctly, there is a possibility that the hot water from the boiler cannot reach the faucet.
