How Long Does a Kitchen Remodeling Project Typically Take from Start to Finish?

Apart from cost, the most common question people ask about their kitchen remodel is, “How long will it take?” The time needed for designing and remodeling a kitchen depends on the scope of the project, the availability of materials, and the type of renovation.

What Are the Different Types of Kitchen Renovation?

There are two primary types of kitchen renovation.

1. Replacement Kitchen Renovation

Replacement kitchen renovations are fairly straightforward. Renovators simply swap out your already existing appliances and fixtures with brand new ones. No reconfiguration is necessary. For example, if you decide to replace your oven, your new oven goes in the same exact place as the old one.

Kitchen replacements typically take 6-8 weeks from start to finish.

2. Custom Kitchen Renovation

Custom kitchen renovations take a little longer than kitchen replacements because they often involve structural changes. If the homeowner wants things moved around, electrical work and other construction can prolong the process.

Again, the exact timeframe will vary depending on your personal needs, but generally speaking, custom kitchen renovations take 10-12 weeks from start to finish.

What Causes Project Delays?

Uncontrollable delays are almost inevitable. However, it is helpful to know what causes them so you can prepare and be better equipped to handle them.

1. Scheduling conflicts with contractors

If you have multiple subcontractors, their respective project delays will likely affect each other. For instance, if one is delayed, it might mean another can’t finish their work yet either.

2. Unexpected repairs

Plumbing and electricity can be unpredictable. Whether you’re working with a replacement renovation or a custom renovation, wiring issues can take some time to iron out.

3. Delayed shipments

If your contractors don’t receive their materials on time, then that will naturally push back the installation.

4. Weather, illness, and other unforeseen circumstances

The fact is, life happens. Accepting upfront that delays might occur will make it easier to recover when they do.

6 Tips for Avoiding Project Delays

Some things are out of our control, but that doesn’t mean that preventative steps can’t be taken to avoid some delays. Follow these general rules of thumb to keep the renovation process flowing as smoothly as possible.

1. Communicate constantly with your designer and general contractor.

2. Choose products and materials at the beginning of the project so they can be ordered quickly.

3. Once the design has been set, avoid making changes.

4. Prepare your home for the renovation.

5. Try not to micro-manage the project.

6. Be available to your designer and contractor.

As with most things, communication is key. Your contractor should be honest with you regarding delays, and it’s important for you to do everything you can to help prevent them on your end.
