What are LED lumens?

LED lumens to measure the amount of light, that is, the luminous flux that comes from a light source, in this case, an LED light. The greater the number of lumens, the greater the intensity of the light emitted by a lamp, and therefore, the brighter it will be in a room.

It is, therefore, a standard measurement that measures the light we perceive with our eyes to compare the intensity of one light or another. Some factors such as the angle of the aperture can affect the LED lumens, but it is a measure with which it is very easy to compare the luminous intensity of different lights without having to test them.

How many lumens does LED emit?

LED lights are known, among other things, for their high energy efficiency. In this sense, an LED light of about 6.5 W, for example, would provide the same luminous intensity as a halogen light of about 50W.

This would mean that to obtain the same luminous intensity, LED lights to consume up to 80% less energy. To achieve the same intensity as with a traditional 60 W bulb, it would require a light with 800 or 850 LED lumens, equivalent to 11.5 W, which would be specified on its packaging.

Using LED lumens as a measure is now much more common than watts, and while watts used to be a good unit of measurement for incandescent bulbs, lights such as halogens, fluorescents, and LEDs have more lumens per watt and are therefore more effective and efficient.

LED lights are, in fact, already the most widely used, so it would no longer make sense to keep measuring in watts.

How to calculate the necessary lumens?

In interior design, knowing how to calculate the LED lumens needed for each room is key to achieve adequate lighting, comfortable and adapted to the needs of each space and user.

Although there is no exact answer on how many LED lumens to use, there are certain recommendations for the different areas of a home, depending on the number of lumens per meter 2:

• Kitchen: 300-400 lumens
• Kitchen (work area): 700-800 lumensLiving room: 400-500 lumens
• Entrance hall: 300 lumen
• Bedroom: 300-400 lúmens
• Bedroom (workroom): 700-800 lúmens
• Bathroom: 500-600 lúmens
• Bathroom (washbasin): 700-800 lúmens
• Reading area: 400 lúmens

However, these recommendations are general, and the LED lumens can be influenced by other factors such as the shape of the room, the height of the support, the colors of the walls and the floor, or the types of lights, among other things. These factors will make that the number of lights suitable for the space you are designing can vary greatly.
