How To Organize Your Kitchen Countertops To Declutter For Good

Published by

A tidy, organized kitchen is a happy kitchen – or so we say. Seriously though, trying to cook anything in a messy, chaotic kitchen is just plain stressful, and we’re here to help you whip your kitchen into shape with some helpfully creative tips to organize your kitchen countertops.

Why an Organized Kitchen is so Important

The kitchen is often the most used room in the house. As such, it can become messy and cluttered rather quickly. If you don’t stay on top of cleaning it and have some sort of organizational structure going on, this room can become chaotic fast.

With daily cleaning and organization, your kitchen can be a joy to use.

An organized kitchen:

  • Saves time – you’ll know where everything is and be able to find what you need when you need it.
  • Saves money – How many times have you bought something only to find out you already had it but just couldn’t find it at home?
  • Is easier to clean – Uncluttered countertops and an organized fridge are easier to wipe down and keep clean.
  • Encourages you to cook more – An organized kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, which will encourage you to cook more meals at home. As a result, you’ll save money and eat healthier overall.

In addition to all these advantages of keeping a clean and tidy kitchen, the reality is that it just looks nice. There’s nothing quite like walking into a sparkling kitchen with uncluttered countertops and a fresh, inviting scent. Guests and family members alike will appreciate the effort!

Begin Organizing Your Kitchen Counter Space

First thing’s first: you need to evaluate what you have and what you need on a daily basis. It might just be a coffee pot, some utensils, and a fruit bowl. Anything else can be stored away out of sight.

This is also a good time to get rid of any small appliances and other kitchenware you no longer need or use. Depending on how much time and energy you want to expend here, you could sell these items online or simply donate them to your local thrift store. The more things you purge from your kitchen cabinets and countertops, the more room you’ll have for storing things out of sight.

7 Kitchen Counter Organization Tips

It might seem tedious at first, but once you see how nice it is to prepare meals on organized countertops and how beautiful your kitchen looks, you’ll enjoy keeping things clean and organized. In that regard, here are a few tips for kitchen counter organization.

  1. Keep counters clear of clutter – Try to keep your kitchen counters as free of ‘stuff’ as you can. For example, use a hanging paper towel holder instead of a standing one. Or use an in-sink caddy to keep sponges and scrub brushes off your valuable counter real estate.
  2. Use a junk bowl – Do your kitchen counters collect everything from random knick-knacks to car keys and more? If so, try placing a bowl for everyone to put things in when they don’t know what to do with them. Once a week, go through the bowl’s contents and put it or throw it away.
  3. Embrace the container – Clear jars and other containers are ideal for storing things like dry goods, rubber bands, and any other things you need often. Placing these items in matching or coordinating containers keeps them handy, gets rid of unsightly, bulky packaging, and makes your kitchen look more ‘put together.’
  4. Rethink utensil storage – Cooking utensils and silverware take up a lot of space in drawers and can be cumbersome to store. To solve both these issues, try using decorative containers to store long-handled utensils on the countertop. You can also store silverware this way, which allows you to place the entire container on the table rather than doling out cutlery individually.
  5. Designate different areas for things – Designating certain areas for specific items saves time and hassle. For instance, that decorative decanter you use for spatulas, large spoons, and other cooking utensils? Place it on the counter next to the stove for quick retrieval. Strategic organizing like this will make your kitchen look neater and well-thought-out.
  6. Take advantage of vertical storage – Many people forget that walls provide a great storage solution. Expand shelving or use cup hooks to store things off the countertops and within easy reach.
  7. Add an island – When counter space is limited, you may want to consider adding an island to your kitchen. With additional shelves, drawers, and cabinets, you’ll not only acquire more meal prep surface, but you’ll also have more storage places, too.

Mail Organizer

In most kitchens, bills and other mail always seem to pile up on the counter. For whatever reason, many people have a problem with throwing away old mail. To solve this problem in your own kitchen, try a mail organizer like this one.

Not only can you keep bills that need to be paid in it, but the individual compartments allow you to store all sorts of odds and ends like scissors, pens, notepads, and more. You’ll never have to dig through that junk drawer again when you need a pen to write with!

Dish Drying Rack

Experts agree that allowing dishes to air-dry is best to prevent the spread of bacteria, however, while they’re doing so, dishes take up a lot of room on the counter. To help solve this problem, we’re recommending a vertical drying rack like this one. It’s made of sturdy, rust-proof material and comes with a drip tray that drains back into the sink. The vertical design allows more counter room for other kitchen activities while dishes air-dry.

Kitchen counter organization is important as it enables you to find what you’re looking for quickly and keeps the room looking great. It might even encourage you to cook more, which is always a good thing! Hopefully, the tips and kitchen counter organization ideas above will inspire you to get your own kitchen counters into shape.
