If you are lucky enough to even have a backyard, you might build a garden barbecue, to make sure you spend quality time with your friends. Here is a step-by-step guide for building a brick barbecue. We’ll recommend you all the basic materials for a long-lasting result.

Step-by-step guide for building a brick barbecue

It might seem like a complex process at first sight. But, if you strictly stick to every step, you’ll get fine results. First, decide the size based on the space. You must avoid grills that are larger than your space because everything will seem packed.

Do a “dry layout” before installation, using rectangular bricks for an improved assessment of the size. You must save space for storing firewood and consider the grill size.

The perfect spot for a brick barbecue

Estimate the available space, the grill size, and its proximity to the house, since you don’t want to roam from the kitchen to your barbecue. Besides, avoid crowded spaces, because you could not find room for more elements (such as for meat or an additional sink).

Plus, think about the smoke exhaust when installing a garden barbecue. Therefore, choose a higher chimney away from the house, to avoid accidental smoke in your home.

Shape and size of the brick barbecue

Once you decide to build a brick barbecue, there’s no turning back. The classic, rectangular shape is much easier to achieve compared to the round one. The recommended standard for larger families/more friends is 70 cm width and 40 cm depth. Choose heat-resistant and waterproof materials if you want to extend the lifetime of your barbecue.

Necessary materials for a standard brick barbecue

There are plenty of materials you can use to build a barbecue. Here are some examples. You can use brick for the body, or also AAC blocks, stone, concrete blocks. Since this is a brick barbecue, you will also need gravel, a metal structure for the cooking grid, mortar, bricks, and cement. In terms of tools, you will need a hoe, a chisel, a tape measure, a spirit level, and a trowel.

Foundation

You have two options for laying out the foundation of a brick barbecue:

– Dig out with a hoe;

– Build up the falsework on top of the foundation.

The second method for building a brick barbecue is more useful when it rains. Use a spirit level to make sure you have a leveled surface. Allow the concrete to cure for two days. In summer, the concrete will cure faster.

Build up walls

Once you have decided on the model, build up the walls by the standard procedure. Just lay out the bricks on top of each other, and apply mortar.

How to pour the concrete slab?

Just lay out a falsework of approximately 2 m long and 80 cm wide. First, lay out a reinforcing bar to serve as additional support. Pour concrete into the falsework and level it with a trowel (use a spirit level for checking the smoothness). The cure time for this is approximately one week.

Build up the garden barbecue oven

You should build the oven of your garden barbecue with firebricks. The brick bond is N-shaped, viewed from the side. What about brick adhesive? We recommend using a fresh mortar mixture for this. Use the spirit level to make sure you have smoothness. After completion, move to the brick roof, in a straight or arched shape. Keep in mind to leave room for the chimney.

How to build up a chimney?

You can use standard or larger bricks to build up a chimney, yet remember to leave a hole in the middle. Also, you can use mortar to bind the bricks together. Use a stiff brush to remove excess mortar, and then use the angle grinder to complete the cleaning process.

Build up the near spaces

By applying the already mentioned building techniques, you can build up sidewalls for storage (coal bag, etc.) purposes or set up spaces for preparing food.

Building a roof or eaves for your garden barbecue

This is optional, so that you could activate it on rainy days or every time you want to block the direct rays of sun. We recommend a roof made of fireproof coating wood and roofing sheet. You’ll also need nails, roofing planks, and a bench plane.

Do not forget the spirit level!

The finishing and barbecue decoration

Once you’ve completed the chimney, it’s time to inspect and consider any improvements. If required, remove excess mortar and smooth the walls with the angle grinder.

Useful tips to keep in mind

Avoid placing the barbecue in areas with trees

To prevent the risk of fire, place your garden barbecue away from areas with vegetation or wooden buildings, as sparks are a heat source and can lead to huge losses. Never leave your barbecue unattended and clean it after every use.

Choose an area with level ground

It is important that your barbecue always sits on a flat surface. You must take care of this detail after choosing the space for the barbecue and build up every stage of the barbecue at the spirit level.

Choose a barbecue design that blends with the setting

Here you have the freedom to play around. Remember that, for a special ambiance, the size of the stones on the pathways or those of the paving leading to the barbecue and the barbecue itself should blend smoothly. It may be difficult, but the result will delight you.

Design your barbecue to clean it quickly and easily

You can use ceramic or natural stone for your garden barbecue worktop. Use special outdoor paints and a fire-retardant brick varnish. Those will extend the life of your garden barbecue and will guarantee an extended lifetime.

Create a space where you can cook

Or an area where you can prepare your barbecue dishes. Put shelves or baskets to store grilling utensils, spices, plates, or other ingredients you’ll need.

Building a garden barbecue is not a really difficult step, but it will take time. The advantage is that every time you use it, you’ll get to enjoy your work. Besides, you have the opportunity of a cost reduction of the budget. Get to work and let us know when you’re done!
