How to Clean Greasy Floors | Carpet Rentals, Inc.

Cleaning greasy floors can be tricky. They’re not only slippery; grease sticks to floor surfaces, trapping a lot of dirt and debris. Couple that with the fast-paced environment of a restaurant kitchen, and it’s no wonder slip and falls are the leading accidents that occur in the food service industry.

With both life and limb at risk in slip and fall accidents, it is important to know how to clean greasy floors.

When it comes to cleaning greasy restaurant floors, with their size and demanding environment, slow-working at-home DIY cocktails of vinegar and soap just aren’t going to make the cut. For industrial needs, you’ll have to find the kind of solution that will work fast and efficiently.

Here are some tips on how to clean greasy floors effectively:

1. Use a dedicated mop for your high-grease areas.

One of the most common mistakes that restaurant staff make in cleaning floors is cleaning with the same mop for all areas and for all stages of the cleaning process. Instead of effectively removing the layers of grease embedded on the floor surface, the damage only spreads further. Use a dedicated wet mop for the first layer of cleaning and finish off with a dry mop. Make sure the mops are cleaned and dried thoroughly in between uses.

2. Treat your tile with anti-slip solution.

Anti-slip chemicals are tile treatment solutions that provide more traction for your floors. Aside from that, certain types of anti-slip material also provide a thorough clean of the tile pores, removing embedded dirt and soap debris that make the floor slippery. Like any chemicals, these should be used with caution and proper consultation with experts, especially for use in a food prep environment.

3. Use a degreaser daily.

High-grease areas like kitchen floors cannot simply be cleaned with the usual soap and water. This proves ineffective in removing grease, which sticks to harder surfaces. Special degreasers are your best option for removing all those layers of grease and gunk that get stuck on your restaurant kitchen floors daily. Use once a day, or twice if the floor area is particularly heavily greased on a regular basis.

4. Clean as you go.

A good amount of the grease that builds up on restaurant kitchen floors is from dropped food items that are not promptly cleaned and picked up, or spills that are not cleaned promptly or thoroughly. Avoid the buildup by practicing the principle of cleaning as you go, never giving grease a chance to cling on your floors.

5. Clean every day.

It sounds like a no-brainer, but many restaurants still forget about this most basic concept. The floor ends up with a significant amount of grease from a single day’s operation and skipping a day of cleaning will cause the grease to accumulate.

6. Invest in slip-resistant matting.

But more than knowing how to clean greasy floors, an even more important thing to know is how to prevent your floors from getting greasy. And the best way to do that is by using the right kind of high-quality anti-slip matting. Anti-slip mats, also known as non-slip mats, are special rubberized backing mats that are designed with stronger traction than most regular mats. With anti-slip mats, you’re not only protecting your workers from the dangers of trip, slip, and fall accidents, but you are also essentially providing a layer of protection for your kitchen floors.
