How to Clean a Greasy Restaurant Kitchen Floor

Your restaurant kitchen goes through a lot in a day. Your staff dashing about all over it, drinks and condiments spillages and food debris contribute to the main mess. Your floor is a habitat for so much bacteria so it’s important that you give it a thorough daily clean. After all, restaurant kitchen floors are notoriously greasy, so the more you can keep on top of it, the better. Here’s a pain-free way to remove grease from a kitchen floor.

The Cleaning Process

You might be thinking, “how hard is it to clean a floor?” Well, that all depends on how thorough you are and your standards of cleanliness. But the process can be broken down into three simple stages:

  • Sweep the floor.
  • Mix together anti-slip cleaner and degreaser to remove the layers of grease from the floor surface.
  • Mop the floor with seven litres of water mixed with 300ml of strong bleach and allow to air dry.

It really is that simple. But in order to get the best results, you have to be thorough and you have to repeat that process each night. Also, once a week, you should add this extra step to the process to ensure that it’s as clean as possible:

  • Take a stiff bristle brush and scrub the floor with the mixture stated above. Once you’ve given the floor a good gutting, take your mop and run over the floor again to get rid of the cleaning residue and catch any last bits.

Getting Rid of the Grease

Let’s explore step two of the process further.

This is a vital step to having a visibly cleaner floor. Once you’ve run the degreaser and floor cleaner mixture across the floor, you should be able to already notice far less grease. If you can’t, we recommend repeating the process another time. You must remove all the grease from the floor, otherwise it won’t mop properly and will never be squeaky clean.

The complete process to remove grease is:

  • Fill the mop bucket with seven litres of warm water and mix in 300ml of strong bleach.
  • Spread the mixture over the floor using a clean mop.
  • Take the stiff bristle brush and give the floor a good scrubbing to lift off every last bit of grease.
  • Keep the area wet for 15 minutes. Slowly use the mop to go over the full area that you’re treating.
  • Rinse the mixture using a clean mop and allow to air dry.

Treat Your Tile Surface

Due to adding different detergents and degreasers to your tiles, you may need to treat them to protect them and keep them slip-resistant too. There are various varnishes and oils you can buy to treat your flooring, but make sure you check you’re getting the correct one before you start ruining your floor with a wrong purchase. This doesn’t need doing every week – we’d recommend treating your floors once every month.

Be Patient

Although you should be able to see a difference straight away, it’s a matter of patience too as well as regular routine. Grease particles linger around fryers and and other equipment and it builds up gradually. Leave the chemicals to work for about 10 minutes once you’ve spread them on the floor. This will allow you to remove more of the grease build up and end up with much better floor traction.

Your Culture of Safety

You can’t simply rely on cleaning your floor every night to keep you and your fellow workmates safe. You have to have a culture of safety in place right from the ground up, literally!

The main way you can stay safe at work in the restaurant is by wearing slip-resistant shoes. That way you can focus solely on being productive and working hard without worrying that you’re going to end up on the floor at some point, potentially injuring yourself and needing to take time off work. Not only will the correct shoes keep you on your feet throughout your shift, but they’ll also provide support to prevent your joints and bones from aching.

All staff members, from new starters to kitchen veterans, should be aware of the potential hazards that can arise in the kitchen environment. If all of your team are singing off the same hymn sheet and can spot the same hazards, it’s likely that the chance of accidents happening will lessen. Which is good news for everybody.

As well as being notified of the hazards, each member of staff should be provided with the right safety shoes. Kitchens can be very dangerous if you don’t take the right precautions. There are hazards round every corner. By equipping your staff, from your janitors to chefs, in waterproof, slip-resistant, durable and easy to clean shoes you can ensure that your staff are being kept safe at all times, productivity levels are as high as possible and industry best practices are maintained.
