Is your kitchen exhaust looking greasy and gross? If so, it’s probably time to consider cleaning it. Before you pick up the phone and call an expert, though, try cleaning it yourself first. Not sure how? Keep reading below. We’ll walk you through an easy 7-step process that’ll leave your kitchen exhaust clean in no time!

How to clean a kitchen exhaust:

Cleaning a kitchen exhaust isn’t as difficult as it sounds. All it takes is a bit of patience and a few simple steps:

Remove the grease filter

First, make sure to unplug the exhaust fan. This protects you in case the electric surges while you are touching the fan and removing/replacing the filter.

Once everything is unplugged, carefully remove the grease filter with gloves on. This is the rectangular, metal mesh section underneath the fan.To remove the filter, unhook any levers or tabs that are holding it in place and pull it gently out. If it doesn’t come out easily, try using a butter knife to slide around the edges.

Place it in a large pan or container

Once the grease filter has been removed, gently place it in a large pan or container. Make sure the container you choose is deep enough to fully submerge the filter on all sides. For example, a sheet pan or a plastic bin might be a good fit for you. Just a note – the pan or container will get very dirty once you start cleaning the filter!

Prepare a cleaning solution

Once the grease filter has been placed in a large pan or container, it’s time to start preparing the kitchen exhaust cleaning solution.

To make the cleaning solution, mix baking soda and dish soap together in a large pot of water and bring it to a boil. These two ingredients are great because they dissolve grease! They also are considered a non-toxic solution when mixed, so you don’t have to worry about inhaling chemicals while cleaning the filter.

Clean the filter

Next, it’s time to clean the filter! Measure out approximately 1 cup of the cleaning solution and pour it into the pan or container holding the filter. Keep adding the kitchen exhaust cleaning solution, one cup at a time, until the filter is completely submerged.

Let it sit for 15-30 minutes to allow the cleaning solution to dissolve as much grease and grime as possible. Then, begin carefully scrubbing the filter with a sponge or bristle brush. The grease should come off easily. If not, let it sit in the cleaning solution longer.

Once the filter has been fully cleaned, rinse it in hot water to remove any grease residue and cleaning solution.

Let the air filter dry

After the filter has been cleaned and rinsed, set it out on a towel and let it air dry completely (approximately 2 hours). It’s important that all moisture has been removed before the filter is re-inserted for safety reasons. Any moisture leftover when the filter has been reinstalled can cause electrical issues.

Clean exhaust fan

While the filter is drying, you can go ahead and clean the exhaust fan itself. To do this, gently use a damp sponge or cloth to remove grease stains. Don’t spray any chemicals onto it directly. Excessive moisture can cause electrical malfunction of the inner components and will affect your exhaust fan’s lifespan.

Make sure to wipe up as much grease as possible, including on the fan blades. Any residual grease let over can cause quicker build up in the future, resulting in the need for more frequent cleanings.

Re-insert the filter

Once the grease filter and the kitchen exhaust fan is clean, you can re-insert the filter. Simply place it back in the same way it came out, making sure to rehook the latches and secure it properly. Then, you can plug the unit back in and use it like normal.

That’s it – 7 easy steps to cleaning your kitchen exhaust! If you’re still not quite sure how to clean your kitchen exhaust, don’t worry. Give a kitchen exhaust expert a call and schedule an appointment. They should be able to help you out in no time.
