Home improvement expert reveals ‘how to clean a plastic sink’ with household items

Home Improvement experts Evolving Home reveal tips and methods to clean acrylic sinks cost-effectively to save you money.

What are the benefits of having a plastic sink?

This sink style is easy to repair; they can react to shock well, so you’re less likely to cause any damage to your dishes when washing up. Another benefit of plastic sinks is that they are more manageable to install than other ranges of sinks such as enamel, stainless steel, or composite.

They do not readily transfer heat, which means water in the sink can stay warmer for longer.

Acrylic sinks are reinforced with resin and fiberglass, which gives them a stain-resistant surface. The polycarbonate plastic used in plastic sinks is easily moulded in a variety of shapes to meet the needs of the owner, making them particularly flexible.

They are an affordable option if you choose the stock shape. Although acrylic sinks are not as durable as stainless steels and enamel, they are long-lasting if you handle them with care.

Before we delve into how to clean your sink, it’s important to avoid using abrasive cleaning tools such as steel wool, as this can scratch the surface easily. Opting for a soft brush, sponge, or cloth works as a great alternative.

And if you’re currently in the market for office furniture Sydney, consider exploring the available options in your area to create a comfortable and productive workspace tailored to your needs.

Here are the best ways to use household cleaning items to keep your acrylic sink looking brand new:

Vinegar and water –

· Combine a quarter cup of white vinegar to one cup of water into a spray bottle, spray the entire sink with the mixture and scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush.

·

Adding baking soda to the mixture –

· Adding baking soda to vinegar to create a fizzy solution is an excellent option for tougher stains. An extra cleaning option using baking soda is to make a paste to target a particular area by combining three parts baking soda to one part water, applying paste to stain and gently brushing.

·

Dish soap –

· Using clean water, rinse the sink and plug the drain. Taking a few pumps of dish soap of your choice, fill the sink with hot water and allow the solution to rest for an hour and a half before draining. If any stains are stubborn, use white vinegar or dish soap directly on the problematic area with a non-abrasive cloth.

·

Lemon juice –

· Squeeze lemon juice on to any stains you’re struggling to remove, scrubbing with a brush onto the area. Lemon juice works really well a natural alternative to bleach and disinfectant; it’s essential to use a soft sponge to avoid causing abrasions to the sink surface from rough materials and acidity in lemons.

·

Denture tablets –

· This option can lift stains off your plastic sink, working the same way the tablets are designed to remove stains off dentures.

·

· Plug the drain and fill with hot water, adding in five tablets for a smaller sink and up to ten for a larger basin. It will start to fizz as it gets to work, so leave to sit for an hour and longer for tough stains, then drain. You can even leave the water overnight safely in the sink.

· Once drained, wipe with a sponge and rinse any residue left before drying.

·

Chemical cleaners –

· If you are struggling to remove stubborn stains and household ingredients aren’t helping, you can use commercial detergents and some extra elbow grease. Cleaners that contain either bleach, calcium carbonate or oxalic acid can assist in removing marks – use a soft cloth with some hot water to remove any stains.

·

· Note: it’s crucial to read to the ingredients as some chemicals are harmful to mix, and wearing PPE is essential to protect your skin from the harmful elements.

·

How do I manage stains the best?

Maintenance is key; wiping over the surface before a stain has time to develop is a great way to avoid having to remove stains. In addition, polishing your taps with a micro-fibre cloth can help maintain shine.
