How to clean Travertine Tiles

The colour schemes we opt for in the rooms of our home play a central role in the vibe and feel that is created.

When we choose tiling, these provide a sturdy base both in both a literal and visual sense. One of the most popular selections is travertine tiles, which typically delivers a bold yet bright effect that works beautifully in modern homes.

However, keeping travertine tiles clean is not always the easiest thing, and any dirt or grime can build up quickly and take the shine off your travertine.

In our latest blog, we cover everything you need to know about travertine tile cleaning. You can then set about getting your travertine floor tiles, travertine wall tiles or travertine mosaic tiles looking their best again in no time.

What is travertine?

Travertine is a natural stone formed in limestone caves. It is formed by the condensation of calcium carbonate, and does not go through the metamorphosis process that other stones like granite and marble do.

Because of this formation process, travertine contains tiny pores. These are made by carbon dioxide bubbles as the stone sets. When used in tiling, these pores give travertine a distinctive visual quality.

This composition means that it is very important for travertine tiles to be properly sealed, and also means that particular cleaning methods should be taken for travertine tiles.

Cleaning travertine floor tiles

Floors bear the brunt of busy family life within the home, and while tiles are exceptionally durable flooring options, they still need some TLC now and again!

This means finding effective travertine tile cleaning and sealing methods is a must. Because of the specific way they are formed, travertine tiles should be treated with care when cleaned. This means things like regular bleaching or other potent products are not a good idea when it comes to travertine tiles. Using gentler methods is the way to go when it comes to cleaning travertine tiles.

Start with sweeping the floor, and look to do this on a regular basis. This helps to prevent dirt being ground into the tile surface and make them lose their vigour over time.

Then mop the travertine floor tiles with a warm water and cleaner solution. It is vital that the cleaner you use is suitable for travertine, so check the product details before using. Most PH neutral cleaners will be ok, and milder ones can be used to ensure no damage is done to travertine surfaces.

Do not let travertine dry naturally, but dry it off with a dry mop or towel. Look to be vigilant when cleaning travertine with a tile cleaner, as if you do not wash the cleaner off quickly enough streaks can form. And if you are finding marks on the surface of your tiles, then a hydrogen peroxide solution can shift them. There is a risk of staining here however, so be sure to test the solution on a less visible part of the floor, such as under a table, before using it on the wider floorspace.

How about wall tiles?

Travertine tiles in bathrooms or kitchens can work just as well on a wall area, extending the smooth and luxurious feel and style further.

The same general principles apply when cleaning travertine wall tiles as when cleaning travertine floor tiles. It is a case of staying on top of the surfaces and doing the right things. These include avoiding bleach and other heavy cleaning products, regular sweeping and brushing, and drying the surface properly.

How to clean travertine tile in backsplash areas is something many people are keen to know the answer to. There are plenty of travertine tile cleaning products out there, and neutral cleaners work beautiful. Or you can put together a solution with two cups of water, two squirts of washing up liquid and half a cup of baking soda. The baking soda and washing up liquid will break up any grime and dirt, while the water will help to give that shine back. Again, be sure to dry with a towel to prevent streaks or stains building.

How about grout in travertine tiles?

If you are wondering how to clean grout between travertine tiles, a PH neutral solution, or the same solution detailed above, is an effective way to get them spotless and looking great.

You may wish to regrout after a number of years however. If so, there are plenty of grouts available from the Stone Tile Company range.
