To the dumpsters.
In New Zealand, we also call the dumpsters skips and we know that many of us once they see a skip nearby, they throw everything in it. This is the purpose of the dumpsters so that collection can be faster and without the fuss. However, if there’s no public rubbish skip around, you have to rent one to dump your waste. It is also not proper to put your waste into the skip that was rented by your neighbor unless you are given permission. But don’t forget that toxic waste or explosives are not allowed to be dumped into skips. The collected rubbish will end up at the transfer station where these will be sorted out.
Eco Drop centers or shops.
These centers are managed by our city’s council and they also do small appliance recycling, sorting, composting of organic waste, and even treating hazardous waste. They are like the one one-stop-shops among the drop-off centers and they can accept many kinds of household items regardless if these are broken or usable. If you’re in NZ, find an Eco Drop center near you and talk to the one in charge about your plan of dropping off your item in one of their boxes.
Transfer stations.
These stations could be your last resort if you are willing to haul your used appliances to the dump. You will be charged accordingly based on the bulk of your items or weight. People at the transfer station will be sorting out all the rubbish that is coming in and most likely if your appliances are still in excellent condition, they will take these to the EcoDrop center to be sold cheaply. If it’s broken and not repairable, it will go to the recycling facility.
