How To Remove Rust Stains From Ceramic Tiles

Rust happens when metal comes in contact with moisture for a prolonged period of time.

As a result of cooking appliances and other metal objects or furniture, it’s not unusual for rust stains to appear on your ceramic floors.

If that’s the case, you need to follow the tips below to remove these stains completely and restore your tiles to their former glory.

1. Follow The Safety Precautions

To remove rust stains from your tiles, you need a few chemicals and abrasives for the best results. They could be natural products or synthetic ones.

Whatever the case, you need to protect yourself. If exposed to bare skin, these products might dry your skin out or cause another reaction.

That’s why you need to wear rubber gloves to prevent any skin problems. You should also wear overalls or at least older clothes in case of splashes or spillages.

2. Remove Any Objects In The Vicinity

If the rust stains are on the bathroom tile floors or in the living room, you need to remove any nearby furniture or objects.

Remember, the cleaning agent may spread onto these objects and cause damage to them.

To be on the safe side, make sure you remove everything in the vicinity of the area you are going to clean.

3. Start By Washing The Floor

Take a bucket and fill it with water and some detergent. Use a sponge to clean the area with the rust by dipping it in the lathered water.

You should scrub the area thoroughly to remove any dirt or loose deposits from the area.

Remember, this will not clean the rust but it will keep the area clean and allow you to see the rust stains clearly as part of your overall preparation.

Once you have finished scrubbing and removing the debris, you can use a sponge in clean water to remove any detergent left on the tile surface.

Next, use a clean cloth to dry up most of the surface water and then you can leave it to air dry completely.

4. Use A Cleaning Solution To Remove The Rust

In order to get rid of the rust stains, you need to prepare a good cleaning solution.

a. The best option is lemon juice with borax which when mixed together creates a paste. Make sure you mix both ingredients in equal proportions.

Use a spatula to scoop up the paste and apply it on the tile with the rust stains. Leave the paste to dry and avoid disturbing it.

Once it’s completely dry, you can use a sponge to wipe it away then rinse the area with clean water.

b. You can also try out a vinegar solution where you mix vinegar and salt in equal parts.

Leave the paste on the spot for about 5 hours before adding some hot water.

Then use a sponge to scrub the area gently. This might take a while before the rust stains are removed completely but be patient and keep scrubbing.

c. Lastly, there is also the alternative of using ready-made solutions.

If you visit the supermarket or grocery store, you should find a cleaning solution for removing rust stains on tiles.

Make sure it’s environmentally friendly and doesn’t affect your tile floors in any other way.

5. Scrubbing Using A Pumice Stone

If you want to get rid of the stains on your tile floors, you should also consider using a pumice stone.

They come in handy if the rust stains are stubborn and the pumice stone won’t scratch the surface.

Conclusion

Your tile floors can make or break your home. They have many benefits including a long life span.

If you want to keep them looking brand new, try these tips to remove any unsightly rust stains effortlessly.

Make sure you choose the right cleaning solution for the best results.
