If you’re in a rental and can’t drill holes into your walls, or simply want to try something new with your drapery, a great way to hang your curtains is by using tension rods.
These versatile tools are adjustable and can be used for various purposes like creating temporary room dividers, hanging lightweight artwork, and of course, as an alternative to traditional curtain rods.
Not only are tension rods easy on the wallet but they also come in different sizes and colors making them a stylish option.
One benefit of using a tension rod is that they don’t require any special hardware or installation skills. To install one all you need is two opposing surfaces (like window frames) for the rod’s spring-loaded ends to grip onto securely.
Tension rods offer an excellent solution if you’re in a hurry or want something that requires minimal effort but will still look great!
Command hooks and self-adhesive hooks are excellent alternatives to traditional curtain rods. They offer a more flexible solution for hanging curtains, especially in situations where drilling holes in walls or frames is not an option.
Command strips come in various sizes and weight capacities, making it easy to find the right one for your specific window treatment. Whether you have lightweight curtains like sheer curtains or heavy blackout curtains, the weight of the curtains won’t matter as long as you choose the right hooks to support that weight.
When using command or self-adhesive hooks to hang curtains, ensure that the surface you intend to stick them on is clean and dry. Remove any dirt or debris from the area before applying the hook for maximum adhesion. And remember that you can’t use adhesive products on a textured surface such as textured plaster walls or textured wallpaper.
You can also use multiple hooks along the top edge of your curtains to evenly distribute their weight and prevent sagging.
One advantage of using command or self-adhesive hooks for hanging curtains is that they do not require any special skills or tools. Even if you have never hung curtains before, you can quickly learn how to do it by following simple instructions provided with these products.
With some creativity and patience, you can create unique designs that add style and personality to your living space while saving money on expensive curtain rods.
Using curtain rings is a creative and cost-effective way to hang window treatments without rods. Curtain rings are readily available in most home improvement stores, and they come in a variety of styles, sizes, and materials. You can use curtain rings to hang curtains, drapes, sheers, or any other fabric that you want to use as a window treatment.
The first step is to measure the length of your windows and determine the number of rings needed for each panel. Now you can hang the rings from the top of the window with many different items such as nails, screws, cup hooks or wall hooks, cabinet hardware, push pins, command hooks, and many more.

You can also decide if you want the window treatment to cover the window or sit along the outer edges. Just place the hardware wherever you want it.
Copper pipes are a great DIY alternative to hanging curtains without rods, especially if you’re looking for a unique and stylish way to hang your curtains. To use copper pipes to hang your curtains, you’ll need to measure the length of your window and cut the copper pipe accordingly. You can then use elbow joints and T-joints to connect the pieces together into the desired shape.
Once you have your copper piping assembled, you can attach it directly to the wall using brackets or a flange or hang it from the ceiling for a more dramatic effect. Simply slide your curtains onto the piping or secure them in place with curtain rings and attach them to the ceiling.
Additionally, their sleek metallic finish adds a touch of industrial charm that complements modern decor styles nicely. With just a few basic tools and some DIY know-how, anyone can create their own customized version of this chic DIY project.
The best way to make cost-effective curtain rods is to use PVC pipes. To make PVC curtain rods, you will need to measure the width of your window frame and decide on the thickness of the pipe. Keep in mind that the smaller the PVC thickness, the less support you will have and they can sag.
You can use a handsaw or a PVC pipe cutter to easily cut the PVC piping to the length you need.
Once you have cut the PVC pipes, sand the ends using sandpaper to smooth them out. Then, paint or decorate them with any other method of choice. After that, install painted brackets on either side of your window frame and insert your newly made curtain rod into these brackets.
To add some texture and design elements to your PVC pipe curtains, consider adding finials or decorative ends at each end of the rod with glue. These can be made from wooden balls, golf balls, Styrofoam balls, or decorative knobs that fit securely onto each end. Of course, you will want to paint them as well if they’re not decorative.
With this simple DIY project, you can achieve beautiful curtains without breaking the bank!
You can find your PVC and copper piping and supplies at your local home depot.
One creative DIY way to hang curtains without rods is by using wire or a wire curtain rod kit. This method requires a few simple supplies and can be completed in just a few easy steps.
If your making your own wire curtain rod then measure the window width and cut the wire slightly longer than that measurement. Next, attach eye hooks to the wall or window frame. Make sure they are level with each other and properly anchored for safety.
Once the eye hooks are installed, thread one end of the wire on the hook then thread the curtains onto the wire until all curtains are hung where you want by adjusting the tension of the wire as necessary. Finally, use pliers or strong fingers to twist each end of the wire around the second eye hook.
Using wire to hang curtains is not only an affordable option but also allows for more flexibility in curtain placement since it can be adjusted up or down easily as needed. Plus, with different types of wires available such as stainless steel or coated wires in different colors, this method can add an industrial-chic touch to any room’s decor while still being functional!
If you’re looking for a way to add some elegance and charm to your window treatments, try using classy drawer pulls instead of traditional curtain rods for a unique look. Drawer pulls come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, making it easy to find the perfect one to match your decor. Plus, they’re usually much more affordable than curtain rods.

Even though drawer pulls are usually found in a kitchen, there are so many different options you are sure to find some that will coordinate in any room from the living room to the bedroom and beyond.
To use drawer pulls as a hanging mechanism for curtains or other window treatments, simply attach them to the wall or window frame using screws or the easiest way with adhesive. FYI: using adhesive will cause wall damage if you decide to remove the pulls. Just be prepared to spackle and touch up your paint as you would with removing screws.
You can then tie your curtains onto the drawer pulls using ribbon or twine for a rustic look or use rings with clips for a more modern touch. Don’t forget to use a stud finder especially if you are hanging heavy window treatments or installing drywall anchors to hold the weight. Or alternatively, you can attach them to the top or side of the window frame.
Not only does this method add visual interest and personality to your space, but it also allows you to customize the length and style of your curtains without any restrictions from traditional curtain rods. So why not give it a try? Your windows will thank you!
If you still want the look of traditional rods but don’t have the budget, the perfect solution is to make your own. Do you have some old rods laying around that are not long enough for your window? One great option is to do what I did in my dining room and cut them down to use just on the edges of the windows. All you need are 4 brackets and the short rods and you have another option to use those old rods.
You can also use wooden dowels or closet poles, or shower curtain rods, from your local building supply store. Just use a tape measure to cut them to the size of your window and stain or paint them and no one will know you didn’t purchase them already finished.
It’s important to note that if you are using something that is going to span the width of a large window you may need an additional center bracket in the middle to prevent sagging.
Magnetic curtain rods have become increasingly popular among DIY enthusiasts as they offer a range of benefits. If you have metal window frames then these innovative rods will eliminate the need for drilling and damaging walls, making them ideal for a rented space or anyone who wants to avoid the hassle of mounting traditional curtain rods. The magnets used in these rods can hold up even heavy curtains, providing excellent support for all types of window treatments.
One of the biggest advantages of magnetic curtain rods is their versatility. They can be easily adjusted to fit any size window, making them perfect for odd-shaped windows or bay windows that require multiple rod sections to cover. Additionally, these rods come in various styles and finishes, allowing you to choose a design that complements your decor theme.
Another benefit of using magnetic curtain rods is their convenience. Traditional curtain rods require time-consuming installation processes that often involve special tools and hardware. In contrast, magnetic curtain rods can be installed within minutes by simply placing them on the metal surface above your window frame. This ease of use makes it easy to switch out curtains whenever you want without having to remove existing hardware first.
Using tree branches to make a curtain rod is an excellent way to add a rustic and natural touch to your home decor. It’s relatively easy, free, and doesn’t require any special tools or skills. Tree branches come in different sizes, shapes, and colors, making it possible to match them with your curtains’ color scheme.
Start by selecting strong and sturdy tree branches that are long enough to fit your window’s width. Then measure the distance between the two brackets where you’ll mount the curtain rod on each side of the window frame. Cut the branches using a saw or pruner, ensuring that both ends are flat and even.
Now you can hang your curtains by draping or looping them over the branch as I did in my 2nd bathroom below.
In conclusion, hanging curtains without traditional rods is a great way to add a unique touch to any room. From tension rods to command hooks, the possibilities are endless. These creative DIY ideas will help you save money and create a look that reflects your personal style.
Don’t be afraid to get creative and think outside the box when it comes to finding ways to hang your curtains without traditional rods.
