How to Install Indoor-Outdoor Carpet on a Wood Deck

Indoor outdoor carpet is perfect for adding even more comfort to a decking area. It holds up incredibly well, with a potential life of up to 20 years and is very easy to clean. Installing indoor outdoor carpet on your deck is simple. You don’t need to know about laying carpet to make it look like a professional job, and you don’t need any specialist tools.

Step 1 – Choose Your Carpet

There’s a very wide range in indoor outdoor carpet these days. You can find them at most carpet stores and also at hardware stores. Once you’ve decided on the color and design for your carpet, you need to calculate how much carpet you’ll need.

Find the square footage of your wood deck by multiplying the length of the deck by the width. Buy a little more indoor outdoor carpet than you need for the deck area, as this will allow for any mistakes in calculations and wastage when you cut the carpet.

Step 2 – Preparing the Deck

You need to prepare the deck before you begin laying the indoor outdoor carpet. To do this, sweep the deck, then use a cleaner to remove all the dirt and grease that might have accumulated. Leave the deck to dry. Once the wood has dried, apply a coat of sealant to the wood. This will protect it when the carpet is lying on top. Leave the sealant to dry completely.

Step 3 – Cutting the Carpet

Lay out your indoor outdoor carpet on the deck. To line it up properly, push one edge of the roll firmly into the corner of the deck and line the carpet up exactly along one edge of the deck. Use several heavy rocks or large objects to hold this side of the carpet in place while you roll out the rest. When you reach the other edge of the deck, make sure the carpet is still perfectly aligned at the first edge and pull it taut.

You can now begin cutting. Use the utility knife, holding the carpet against the edge of the deck and using this as a guide for your cut. Cut a few inches at a time, constantly checking that your line is straight.

Depending on the width of your patio area, you might also need to cut along the length of the deck so that the carpet will fit to size. Put rocks or weights along the length of the deck on the side opposite to the one you’ll be cutting in order to keep the indoor outdoor carpet in place.

Step 4 – Glue

Pull back half the carpet. Take your glue and apply a layer around the deck running about 18 inches from the edge. Roll the carpet back and press down over the glued area, working out any air bubbles and stretching the carpet taut.

Now, do the same on the other half of the carpet so that all the edges are glued down. Again, work out the air bubbles and ensure that the carpet is taut. Weigh down all the edges so the carpet can’t pull back. Leave the glue to dry overnight before you use the deck again.
