Three Ways to Keep Birds Away From the Patio, Porch and Deck

The sound of chirping birds is a telltale sign of summer days. It’s the background to family barbecues, late night bonfires, all day pool parties, and early morning coffees in the garden. While the singing contributes to sunny memories, the summer nostalgia can quickly wear off if birds are taking over your space. Waking up to morning chirping and constantly cleaning up bird droppings can change your feelings about these feathered friends.

To keep your home clean and quiet, we recommend trying some of these simple tricks to answer how to keep birds away from deck areas or patios.

How to Keep Birds Off Deck Areas Using Decor

While setting up your deck or patio for the summer, try adding decor that will deter birds. These items can provide charm to your background and keep birds away at the same time. Some decor items to try include:

  • Wind chimes. The sound is beautiful to listen to in the summer breeze for you and your guests. However, birds wouldn’t agree. The noise and movement of wind chimes will scare birds off your deck, patio, or porch.
  • Reflective items. Birds are sensitive to bright, reflective colors and will typically avoid any place that has them. Take advantage of this by using reflective flash tape, small mirrors, or other reflective decorative items.
  • Statues or decoys. Placing a statue of a hawk, swan or other large predator bird is an easy way to scare off smaller birds from coming into your yard.

When adding items to your yard, such as decoys, be sure to switch them up. Rotating your plastic predator or other tactics to prevent birds from catching on to your tricks will become useless.

How to Keep Birds Off Deck Areas by Blocking Resources

If birds are flocking to your yard, it may be due to resources including food, water, and shelter. It’s important to consider if you’re providing these resources intentionally or unintentionally.

If you have bird feeds or bird houses out but are finding too many birds near your deck, relocate these items. If you are providing resources that aren’t intended for birds, block these resources or birdproof them. Some suggestions include:

  • Move birdbaths and feeders. It’s no surprise birds are going to hang around a spot they can receive food and water. To keep your deck a bird-free zone, relocate these items to be in a different location on your property.
  • Cover and seal food sources. If your yard has any outdoor food sources, such as barn feed, cover these resources to keep birds out. Sealed, plastic containers come in size dimensions that exclude birds. When feed spills, keep it cleaned up to avoid hungry birds from gathering to the area.
  • Block nesting spaces. Openings and holes in walls, ceiling rafters, gutters, and other tight, cozy spaces are ideal real estate for nesting birds. You can block off rafters and other perching areas using bird nesting. Small openings in your wall or other areas can be stuffed with copper scouring pads, which will stay in place and won’t splinter or rust.
