Amazing air dry clay recipe that will work well every time – No Cracks

Published by

This air dry clay recipe is very simple. Really! And, this is my favorite now. Why? It is because I can speed up my crafting process. Yeah..the clay will dry in less than 24 hours, in fact in less than 8 hours for thin layer of clay. Isn’t it awesome?

I don’t need to worry much about cracking lines when using this clay to wrap jar or cardboard because it will not shrink like other type of air dry clay.

Air dry clay recipes (2 option):

I make 2 types of recipes: one without glue and the other one with glue. I give you this option because you may not have the same plaster I use for this clay.

My basic ingredient is plaster of paris.

The history saying that the plaster was made of quick-setting gypsum found near Paris. That’s how these fine white powder got its name.

Plaster of paris dry very fast when mix with water. It was originally used for casting cornices and decorative elements for interior works.

I did a little experiment with this plaster when making clay texture paste.

I have added flour on to the plaster to reduce it’s drying time. It works well for my craft. I know the flour may change its property and strength. But, I don’t worry too much because I use this plaster for personal craft projects, not to build something as part of the building interior items.

I would then playing with the amount of water. When I reduce the amount of water, adding a little bit of baby oil, the paste becomes air dry clay.

Then, I use this clay for my craft projects. The result? AMAZING!

So, I decided to share with you here.

Clay recipe without glue:

  • 3 parts plaster of paris
  • 1 part flour
  • 2 or 3 parts water (add water little by little and stop if you think you have right consistency)
  • baby oil (few drops/ as needed)

Recent craft projects (without glue):

How’s about the glue?

Honestly, the glue is optional. You will have sticky clay or slightly flexible clay with additional glue. That’s it!

But, it is helpful if you decided to use other type of plaster instead of plaster of paris. I meant, to be safe, just add glue if you use normal plaster.

I like this recipe when I do pre-color air dry clay – mixing acrylic paints with wet clay for stand alone items. It behaves like cold porcelain clay.

However, this is not my favorite. I’ve found that the glue will make the clay shrink more than the one without glue. It means, you may have cracks if you use this clay to wrap the jar.

Anyway, give it a try to see the differences.

Clay recipe with glue:

  • 3 parts plaster of Paris
  • 1 part flour
  • 1 part glue
  • 1 part water
  • 2 parts baby oil

Recent craft projects (with glue):

Oh ya…how to make the air dry clay then? Easy! Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix them. That’s it! no fuss, no mess. You’ll have best homemade air dry clay in minutes. Believe me!
