Video how to make cloud dough without cornstarch

My kids seriously cannot get enough of cloud dough, my husband on the other hand has been asking when we’ll be moving onto the next play recipe… You see cloud dough is the perfect dough for good, messy, sensory fun! It’s easy to make, moldable, and has a wonderful texture to it that kids cannot resist. And want to know the best part about cloud dough? It uses only two ingredients!

Cloud dough is the second play recipe in our new You Tube series Creative Basics: Classic art and science projects and basic play recipes that every parent, educator and caregiver should have in their toolkit. If you haven’t tried this dough I urge you to take a few minutes and mix up a batch today and let your kids have a go with it, you’ll be amazed at how enticing it is! I’ll also be showing you how to color it, make a chocolate version, and I have links to other resources on the web including a gluten-free version for children with gluten sensitivity.

Ingredients

  • Flour
  • Oil I prefer baby oil or canola oil

Note: Other oils may be used, The only oil I DO NOT recommend for this recipe is coconut oil because it hardens when it cools.

Basic Ratio: 8 to 1: Flour to Oil

For every cup of flour you need 1/8 cup of oil

Instructions

  • Step One Add 2 cups flour to a large bowl.
  • Step Two Add ¼ cup of oil. Stir to combine.
  • Step Three Knead the dough with your hands to fully mix.

paint or chalk.

Instructions

  • Step One Add 2 cups flour to a large bowl.
  • Step Two Mix 1/4 cup of oil with 1 Tsp candy food coloring, stir.
  • Step Three Add the colored oil to the flour; stir to combine.
  • Step Four Knead the dough with your hands to fully distribute color and oil.

Chocolate Dough

My kids LOVE this dough! My 3year old keeps asking for more chocolate dough please! To make chocolate dough follow the basic recipe above, then sprinkle cocoa powder into the dough. Knead to combine. Chocolate dough has a wonderful smell to it and is prefect for pretend cooking play.

Handle the mess like a champ!

Cloud dough is the very best in messy play! Be prepared by trying the following:

  1. Place the cloud dough in a large plastic storage bin with shallow sides. Put this on the floor and have you kids play with the dough inside the bin.
  2. Do this activity outside where you won’t mind a mess.
  3. Place a large tablecloth or plastic sheet down underneath the area the kids will be using the cloud dough. When they are done, gather up the sheet and dump any dough on the sheet right back into your bin.

Best Bet: Do all three of the above!
