There is nothing like a new set of cushions to liven up your old patio furniture. But there is always the worry that a new set of cushions won’t fit as well as the existing ones. But at Cushion Factory, our outdoor patio cushions are tailor-made to your exact specifications so they’ll fit as well, if not better than your existing ones. In this blog, let’s talk about how to measure patio furniture for cushions.
But to ensure a good fit you need to get accurate measurements. Don’t worry this is easier than you think. We just need a handful of basic measurements which you can get using any standard tape measure.

Measure the chair not the cushions
When measuring for outdoor seat cushions many people think they can just measure their existing cushions. The trouble is, over time your cushions spread and become thinner. So if you base your new cushions on the size of the old ones they will be too wide and thin for your chair.
That’s why we recommend measuring the chair and not the cushions. This will give you a better fit and a more comfortable seat. But with garden furniture coming in various shapes and sizes how do you go about measuring the chair accurately?

Total width
With your tape measure in hand, start by measuring the span of the base from the front of the seat from left to right. Then do the same thing across the middle and the back of the seat. You should now have three measurements. Don’t worry about fractions of an inch, always round up to the nearest half-inch.
Seat depth
Next, we need the seat depth. Measure from the middle of the base to where it meets the back. If there is a gap in the frame, make sure you take this into account. You can get a more accurate measurement by placing a piece of wood or rigid ruler down the back of the seat to where it meets the base. If your chair base tapers at the edge you will also need to measure from either the left or right-hand side to the seatback.
Back height
Finally, if you want a separate back cushion you need to measure the back height. Start by measuring the tallest point in the middle of the back to the base of the seat. Make sure you measure down to the seat if there is a gap in the frame. If your seat back rises significantly in the middle you will need to take another measurement from either the left or right-hand side. Now you need to subtract the thickness of the base cushion from the total height. This is because the back cushion sits on top of the base cushion.
