Resin statues and sculptures are trendy. They invade gardens and terraces. A nice way to personalize the decoration of your outdoor spaces. If you’ve just purchased one, here are some tips on how to care for it.

Having a statue or sculpture in your yard or garden adds a touch of originality to your outdoor design. There are of course all types in a wide variety of materials, shapes and sizes. But when choosing a decorative item for the outdoors, remember that it should not only look good, it should also withstand the weather. So make sure the material you choose is weather resistant and doesn’t get dirty too quickly.

Why choose resin statues?

Today, there is a very wide range of very realistic figurines and reproductions in synthetic resin: almost all animals, domestic or exotic, but also fantasy characters, or bird feeders and waterers and many other decorative objects for the garden.

What is polyresin?

Polyresin is a special form of synthetic resin that is ideal for outdoor decoration. It is a powder liquefied by heat, poured by injection into a mold. The final appearance is sometimes similar to stone or marble, at a much lower cost.

The quality of the reproduction is often incredible, because the synthetic resin allows to obtain a level of details such as the statue seems more real than nature.

Advantages of resin statues

The advantages of polyresin over other materials are numerous:

  • The main advantage is the lightness. Resin statues are therefore easier to transport than stone, metal, bronze or cast iron sculptures.
  • The price is often the deciding factor, at least in comparison to similar statues in stone or marble.
  • A material that is resistant to weather, frost and UV rays
  • Relatively easy to repair: small snags can be repaired. A little resin paste, a little paint and your statue is like new.
  • An incomparable level of detail: if you like realistic reproductions, the details obtained with this type of molding are generally amazing!

Care and cleaning of resin statues

To stay beautiful, resin statues need regular maintenance! Indeed, bad weather, air humidity and wind can progressively tarnish it, as soon as moss and air pollution colonize the surface.

The resin statues you find on the Gardennice website are made to stay in the garden all year long. The quality of their finish is such that they are weather and UV resistant. Nevertheless, by dint of being outside in all weathers, the sculptures get a patina or moss sometimes settles. That’s why it’s important to clean them from time to time. Nothing complicated, don’t worry!

Simply clean your sculptures or figurines with a sponge soaked in warm water and soap. Do not use aggressive or abrasive products. Rinse with clear water, then dry with a soft cloth, preferably microfiber.

Be gentle with your statues when you rub them. Resin is not unbreakable! Use a garden hose with a gentle setting, such as shower or mist, to rinse your statues. Never use a high pressure cleaner. Too much spray could damage the details.

You can, however, use a steam cleaner. It will remove the stains deeply.

Protecting your statues from the elements

Extreme temperatures or excessive humidity can have a negative effect on your statues.

Under extreme conditions, the resin tends to expand and contract. We therefore advise you to place your statues away from direct exposure. Store them in a dry place in winter – basement, garage or garden shed.

Also, in case of intense sunlight, it is better to avoid leaving your sculptures in direct sunlight, even if all our statues are treated to resist UV rays. They risk, in the long run, to be tarnished. To slow down this normal weathering process, place them in a shaded area.

It is also possible to apply a special varnish to delay damage caused by weather conditions.

In conclusion

Our animal statues and resin figurines are perfectly suited for winter outdoors. They are treated for external use. But we advise you to keep them in a protected place in case of extreme temperatures or strong frosts.
