Congratulations! You finally got your very own amazing KitchenAid stand mixer! I am sure you know by now that the stand mixer will make your baking effortless and your time in the kitchen so much more fun. Just think about it, you no longer have to stress over those dreary prepping chores or spend countless arm-aching hours mixing batter or kneading dough. How great is that?!

While you most likely got a little selection of accessories with your new stand mixer, the attachments that KitchenAid offers for your baking and cooking needs go far beyond the mixing bowl, beater, dough hook, and whisk.

Fancy making delicious homemade sorbets, gelatos and decadent ice creams? The ice cream maker has you covered. What bout the the precise heat bowl, a nifty attachment that enables you to temper chocolate, make fondue, proof bread dough, ferment yogurt, and even whip up some warm soups? Don’t even get me started on the third-party KitchenAid attachments like spiralizers, food grinders, and pasta makers that I won’t discuss here (they deserve an entire article of their own!)

It is safe to say that your journey to cooking up a storm has begun.

But, wait! Have you figured out which attachment goes where? Moreover, do you know how to properly attach the KitchenAid stand mixer attachments without damaging your precious mixer? What about how to remove KitchenAid attachments?

Don’t worry! I have you covered. Soon, you’ll know everything about attaching and removing all those KitchenAid attachments, and what to do when an attachment gets stuck.

How to Attach KitchenAid Attachments

You’ve unboxed all the fancy stuff, and the machine is ready to roll. But, what about those attachments and their pecking order?

Should you attach the mixing bowl first or the beater and dough hook?

Really, the sequence doesn’t really matter. Luckily for us, bakers and cooks, KitchenAid mixing and other attachments are easy to attach and remove. Here’s a quick video that perfectly demonstrates how to attach the basic attachments to the beater shaft.

Before you start attaching them to the stand mixer, we first need to choose which attachment to use. If you’re planning to whip or emulsify ingredients, opt for the whisk. To make bread or pasta dough, keep the dough hook ready, and for mashing boiled tubers or mixing batters and dips, select the flat beater.

Before you do anything, make sure to unplug the mixer from the power source and ensure the speed control is turned to OFF/00.

I suggest doing this every time before you attach any attachments to the stand mixer. Sure, it’s a little extra hassle, but this safety precaution not only protects you but your expensive mixer from damage!

Attach standard mixing accessories

Now that you have all the proper items in place, let’s start attaching some of those accessories. All of the standard mixing accessories that come with your mixer (the wire whip, beater, and dough hook) are connected under the mixer head.

To attach your beater, whip, or dough hook:

  1. Find the beater shaft under the mixer’s head. For tilt-head models, unlock the head using the lever on the side of your machine and tilt it backwards. With bowl-lift models, you have to locate the shaft underneath the head.
  1. Line up the rod (at the side of the shaft) with the notch on your attachment. Now slide it over the shaft as high as it goes.
  1. Turn the whip or beater anticlockwise until it is locked into place. Make sure it is properly secured in place as we don’t want mixing accidents when the machine is in use!

My Top Tip: After the first use, clean the attachment shaft every time before you attach your dough hook, whips, and beaters. This removes any food residue and prevents the beater from getting stuck!

  1. Lower the head back (if you’re using a tilt-head model) and lock it in place. Add the attachments like the mixing bowl or ice cream maker and plug the machine into the power source.

While most stand mixers some ready to go out of the box, on rare occasions, you may find that you might need to adjust your mixer clearance for the attachments to work properly. This can happen if your machine has been knocked or you have a secondary mixing bowl of a different size.

Attaching the mixing bowl

Firstly, choose your bowl. For most of us, it will be the standard stainless steel bowl that came with your mixer but you might also decide to use the ice cream maker, or heat precision bowl. Either way, the process for attaching these is still the same. How you secure the bowl to the mixer depends on if you are using a tilt head or bowl lift mixer.

For tilt-head stand mixers:

  1. Ensure the power is turned off. First, align the mixing bowl with the bowl-clamping plate at the base.
  1. Push the bowl downwards a little and then twist it clockwise until the bowl snugly fits over the plate.
  1. Wiggle the bowl or gently pull it up to check if it is secure enough. If it moves, remove it and repeat step 2 until it sits firmly.

For bowl-lift stand mixers:

  1. Unplug the mixer first and make sure the bowl-lift handle is in the DOWN position.
  1. Position the handles of the chosen bowl over the locating pins of the support arms.
  1. Press down on the back of the bowl. You will hear an audible sound as the pin snaps onto the latch.
  1. Add ingredients into the bowl and then raise it. You need to do this to bring the ingredients closer to the mixing attachment. Rotate the stand handle upward to the desired level.
  1. To lower the bowl, rotate the handle back and down. Make sure the bowl is in the locked position before you start mixing.

Attaching KitchenAid accessories to the multipurpose hub

Optional attachments transform the KitchenAid stand mixer into the perfect tool for additional cooking activities other than just mixing and whipping.

To attach most of these accessories, you need to use the universal attachment hub. Although every KitchenAid has a multi-purpose hub, before you buy any extra accessories, make sure your specific attachment works with your stand mixer.

Some models like the bowl-lift 6.9L Professional or the tilt-head 3.3L don’t support every extra attachment. If your attachment goes into the power hub, then rest assured it will work with your stand mixer.

To attach an attachment to the multipurpose/power hub:

  1. Unplug the mixer first and turn the speed control to OFF.
  1. Remove the power hub cover by either unscrewing the cover or flipping up the cover.
  1. Now insert the shaft of the chosen attachment like the spiralizer or pasta maker into the hub. Rotate the attachment until it fits properly.
  1. Tighten the hub knob until the attachment is fully secured to your stand mixer.
  1. Place a mixing bowl under the attachment.

You have completed all the steps and attached your KitchenAid stand mixer attachment. You are all set to bake or meal prep!

How to Remove KitchenAid Attachments

Your mixer has finished its whipping, churning and grinding tasks. It’s time to clean the bowl and accessories. And to do precisely that, you need to know how to remove each attachment.

Just as we did when we attached them, ensure to unplug the mixer and ensure the speed control is turned to OFF/00 before you remove any attachments.

To remove the beater, whisk and dough hook from a tilt-head mixer:

  1. Slide the lever to the unlock position and tilt back the mixer head.
  1. Remove the flat beater, wire whip or dough hook by pushing the attachment up. Turn it clockwise and then pull downward.

To remove the beater, whisk and dough hook from a bowl-lift mixer

  1. Rotate the bowl-lift handle to the down position.
  1. Remove the flat beater, wire whip or dough hook by pushing the attachment up. Turn it clockwise and then pull downward.

Removing KitchenAid attachments from the multipurpose hub

You have plugged the special attachment into the multipurpose power hub. The ingredients have been mixed, ground or milled.

To remove an attachment from the multipurpose/power hub:

  1. Loosen the knob on the hub.
  1. Rotate the attachment until it becomes loose.
  1. Now gently pull the shaft out of the hub.
  1. Replace the power hub cover by either screwing the cover or flipping down the cover.

Stuck KitchenAid attachments

Your oven is ready to receive the delicious goodies you have just baked but your mixing bowl remains stuck, too.

One of the most common reasons for mixing attachments getting stuck is residue food particles inside the cavity of the flat beater or wire whisk. One way to prevent this from happening in the future is to remove the attachment immediately after mixing. Then clean the attachment by placing it point down.

If this doesn’t work, I have a couple of solutions for you.

How to remove an attachment that is stuck

  1. Place a warm and wet towel around the attachment shaft for 10-15 minutes. Rewarm the towel and place it again for 2-3 minutes more. This will cause the aluminum or steel attachment to expand making it easy to wiggle out.
  1. Apply a few drops of mineral oil or vegetable oil spray to the slot where the attachment sticks to the shaft pin. Let the oil do its magic for 4-5 minutes before you try to remove the whisk, beater or dough hook.

Remember to clean off the oil after you remove the attachment.

So, go on, and let your stand mixer do what it is meant to do!
