I love puffer vests! I reach for my vest more than my puffer jacket or any other coat.

Puffer vests are perfect in cold weather because they add extra warmthto keep your body temperature up. But the best part of wearing a vest is that your arms stay free so you don’t become overheated and drenched in sweat when you’re doing outdoor activities.

If you’re wondering if puffer vests are still in style, they are a wardrobe staple that isn’t going anywhere!

Are puffer vests still in style in 2023?

Puffer vests are a great addition to your wardrobe and they aren’t going anywhere. A wide or narrow channel down vest is a classic style that is timeless and worth investing in. You’ll see vests in many different colors including bright colors. Choose a solid, neutral vest and you can wear it year after year. There are many different styles of new puffer vests that are trendy, including a puffer vest with cap sleeves, vests with ties up the side instead of seams, heavy duvet wrap puffer vests, belted vests and vegan leather vests. You’ll also see quilted vests with wavy or diamond pattern stitching. To create a fresh and up-to-date look, let go of patterned, plaid or floral vests.

Perhaps you remember wearing a puffer vest with skinny jeans, a sweater or plaid flannel shirt, and knee-high boots in 2018. This was an outfit I wore all the time!

But it’s time to purge this puffer vest from my closet. There are so many fresh and current ways to wear a puffer vest.

What goes under a puffer vest?

You can wear a puffy vest in so many different ways. Wear one over a button-down shirt, crewneck t-shirt, or with your favorite sweater, sweater dress, shirt dress or sweatshirt. Pair one with your favorite jeans, skirts, sweatpants or leggings.

If you want to create a current look with your quilted puffer vest, I have 10 puffer vest outfit ideas to inspire you as you get dressed.

First up, here’s an updated way to wear your skinny jeans with a puffer vest.

Olive puffer vest with a white button-down blouse and skinny jeans

Skinny jeans have been taking a hit lately after Gen Z declared them to be out on TikTok. But they’re such a good fit for so many people, they aren’t really going anywhere.

To keep your skinny jeans look current, just pair them with trending pieces.

Here I’m wearing skinny jeans with a classic olive puffer vest from Old Navy and a trending white button-down blouse. I finish the look with lug sole mules.

This olive puffy vest has straight wide quilted channels. That gives it a classic style. It’s a shorter vest that hits at the top of the hip, making it perfect to wear with high-waisted jeans.

Puffer vests add bulk to an outfit, so wearing skinny jeans on the bottom balances out the proportions. Anytime you’re wearing something with a relaxed fit on the top, wear something slim fitting on the bottom to keep from looking frumpy.

Chunky lug sole mules have some heft that also balances the puffy jacket.

A brown tote bag matches the shoes and ties that color into a second spot on the outfit.

A half-front tuck on the white button-down shirt creates a current and casual vibe that also reveals the waistline on one side, making the legs look nice and long.

Black puffer vest with a black sweater dress

This next look is one you could wear to work or even a casual dinner party.

I’m wearing a classic black puffer vest over top of a black turtleneck sweater dress that has a straight but relaxed fit.

A column of one color is very chic. This lightweight vest has a slimmer fit and is longer than the last vest. It works well with a relaxed fit sweater dress because it doesn’t add more bulk and it comes down over the booty, adding structure and a clean straight line.

These platform Chelsea boots with a lug sole are substantial enough to stand up to the relaxed fit of the dress and jacket.

Black puffer vest and flannel plaid shirt dress

Here’s another puffer vest outfit with the same black puffer vest over top of a red and black plaid shirt dress. Wearing a puffer vest over top creates a casual look.

Black tights are a great way to add some additional warmth to the outfit. And Chelsea platform lug sole boots are a great choice for a casual boot that’s comfortable but elevated by a bit of a heel.

Black puffer vest with a striped button-down shirt and straight jeans

If your work dress code allows jeans on Friday, this smart casual outfit may be one you could wear to work.

I’m pairing a black puffer vest over top of a classic blue and white striped button-down shirt that I’ve tucked in to look more formal.

Polished straight dark blue jeans are perfect for work. The dark color makes them read more like a pair of pants. They’re more formal since they’re free from distressing, bleaching or rips and have a stitched ankle hem.

These black shiny lug sole loafers add a fun twist to the outfit and tie the black of the vest into another spot in the outfit. A tote bag means you’re ready for work.

Olive puffer vest with a gray sweatshirt and black sweatpants

In the winter months, this is the outfit I wear for my daily walks. I love how this plush quilted vest zips up and keeps my neck nice and warm. And these sweatpants are fleece lined and toasty. On days that are warmer, I wear black leggings instead.

I’m playing with proportions in this outfit. The puffer vest adds bulk so I went for a slimmer fitting sweatshirt rather than an oversized sweatshirt. And some slim fitting black sweatpants.

When I’m walking, I wear black running shoes but I couldn’t resist pairing this outfit with these black Adidas tennis shoes. Throwing on these tennis shoes is one of my favorite ways to create a super fashionable and current look.

Olive green puffer vest with a black turtleneck sweater and black kick crop jeans

A column of black is very chic.

Adding a contrasting olive puffer vest over top this black sweater and black jeans combo adds some visual interest to a minimalist outfit. As does choosing brown shoes and a brown bag. Wearing brown accessories with a black outfit creates a fresh and current look that makes a monochromatic look really pop.

Olive puffer vest with a gray cable-knit sweater and mom jeans

Here’s that olive padded vest again. I’m wearing it with a slim fitting short cable-knit sweater that doesn’t add to the bulk on the top. And I’m wearing a pair of dark mom jeans on the bottom with brown Chelsea boots that add some contrast.

Mom jeans are a more relaxed fit and the jeans you want to wear when you want to be comfortable. I’m deliberately choosing a shorter sweater and vest and pushing up my sleeves to help define the waistline and keep from looking frumpy.

Black puffer vest with a white crewneck t-shirt and boyfriend jeans

This is a perfect outfit for a Saturday afternoon on the go.

I’m pairing my black slim-fitting puffer vest with a clingy white crewneck t-shirt to balance out these looser boyfriend jeans.

The black sling bag and Adidas tennis shoes are a cool touch that make you ready to run around.

Black puffer vest with a striped crewneck and black flowy wide-leg pants

This outfit feels a bit rebellious to me because it’s so comfy. It’s the perfect travel outfit. I’m wearing my super soft black flowy pants and a clingy crewneck top with a black puffy vest.

The brown lug sole mules are substantial enough that they don’t get lost underneath the pants. And brown adds a contrast that’s visually interesting with black.

Navy puffer vest with a brown and navy striped sweater and a navy skirt

The world of fashion can create so much pressure to add more and more stuff to your closet. So in this outfit I’m celebrating tried and true pieces and some oldies but goodies.

I’m wearing a clingy navy denim skirt with a mock-neck brown and navy Breton stripe sweater that’s from a few seasons back. And adding a very old classic navy puffer vest over top.

The slim skirt balances out the oversized sweater and vest. And a pair of classic brown lug sole riding boots grounds the look.

How do you wear a puffer vest casually?

There are so many different casual outfits you can make with a puffer vest! The best way to wear a puffy vest casually is as a top layer over a sweatshirt with sweatpants or leggings and sneakers. Wear one to exercise outside in the cold weather, or to run errands. Or wear your quilted vest with jeans and a sweater to a casual lunch out with friends, or to a sporting event. Have fun with it and wear it in a way that feels most like you! XO, Marya
