5. Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Story Walkthrough – Plants

Before we start the main game and story walkthrough, note that you can change the difficulty for the overall game to easy in the options menu next to the hall of fame in your backyard. I recommend doing this since there is no achievements tied to doing this on a harder difficulty, keep in mind that this doesn’t affect either Garden Ops or Multiplayer.

Main Story

When you first start the game, you’ll find yourself as a Sunflower in the middle of the zombie-infested Zomburbia. After a short cinematic, you’ll spawn inside a small village. As you spawn, you’ll trip an alarm in the form of a zombie post-box (the eyes will flash red and you’ll hear an alarm sound). Crazy Dave will appear as a speech bubble and tell you to escape. All you have to do is run forwards, heading towards the blue arrow on screen. Honestly, there isn’t much point in exploring around here, as there isn’t much to find. Just follow the main road down the street and follow the instructions on screen. Set off as mant alarms as you can while going down the street, where the more alarms you set off, the more zombies will appear. These zombies are the absolute basic NPC’s you find in game and don’t take many shots at all. As you kill them, you work towards:

  • Rinsed ‘Em

    Vanquish 5000 Zombies.

After completing most of the other achievements that I’ll lead you through and that you mop up yourselves, this achievement, along with plant-killing equivalent:

  • Gramma Z Says…

    Vanquish 5000 Plants.

Will both come naturally.

As you reach a small crossroads, where the blue arrow is directing you, another small cinematic will start showing three zombies (two Soldiers and a Giant) guarding a gate. These are then blown up, also opening the gate. Head through the gate and into the circle the other side. You’ll then have to defend yourself in this circle for 45 seconds until you’re rescued. Remember to deploy your sunflower pot for healing. You can leave the circle, however make sure that you are inside the circle once the countdown finishes. Once the countdown hits 0, you’ll be teleported up into Crazy Dave’s Van and taken to the Backyard Battlegrounds.

Plants Story Missions

Once you regain control of your character, first thing I’d suggest is turning 180 degrees and heading toward the machine on your left that looks like a sort of vending machine with a tube. Here, you’ll be able to switch you characters. Switch to either the Kernel Corn or the Rose, as these both have achievements associated with them (detailed on the next page). From here, turn back around and head towards the noticeboard to your left. Check which quests are available for the plants, and select some of them to work on. You’ll earn stars and/ or coins from completing these, which you’ll need to unlock bits later on (Especially the stars!). If there are any quests with a gold mark next to them stating “EPIC”, choose them. They are relatively rare, and you need to complete 10 of them for an achievement.

Turn around again so you’re facing the Plant fortress entrance and look to your left, you’ll see a garage door partially opening and shutting over and over, with a glowing yellow exclamation mark. These exclamation marks signify quests or important things.

Activate this quest and you’ll be introduced to the Dave-bot 3000. Go through a quick cutscene and once you regain control, follow the objective arrow up the ramparts for another cutscene. You’ll have to clear out the zombies near the hotdog stand, remember to use your Goatify (if you’re the Rose) or your Shuck Shot (as the Kernel Corn). Activate the Hotdog Stand to grab the Garage Door Remote, then head back to Davebot-3000. Open the door and speak with him. He’ll ask you 5 questions, which you can answer anyway you want.

You will become a part of L.E.A.F and will be given your first set of quests. With the majority of these quests, it’s simply a matter of following the objective arrow until completion.

The first quest is to find Agent Grumpy Stumpy. Follow the marker to find him and from here on out you’ll need to defend/escort him to near the base to finish this mission. Upon reaching the final location, you’ll finish your first quest. Head back to Davebot for your next quest; to retrieve the shoes from Boney Island. As soon as you accept the mission, you’re taken to Boney Island. This will be your first taste of Garden Ops (or Graveyard Ops if you’re a zombie later on, they’re exactly the same mode, but I’ll use them interchangeably for both Plants and Zombies). Get used to them, as there is an annoying RNG based achievements later on that you can only get in Garden/Graveyard Ops.

This mission is the first real Garden Ops mission. Basically you need to defend a planted garden against hordes of Zombies. Each wave gets harder while a few special waves have certain objectives that need to be obtained. Then at waves 5 and 10, you’ll have a roll of the slots in order to decide what boss wave you’ll be facing. In this case, there are only 5 waves rather than the usual 10, and the last wave has a Gargantuar boss that has an item we want. Plant whichever 3 heroes you fancy by your side, if you’re a Kernel Corn, I would usually tend to choose two Sunflowers and a Cactus. However, in this case, I suggest going for a Sunflower, a Cactus and a Rose. When you have spawned all three, press or and switch through each character to unlock:

  • Skinchanger

In solo ops, swap to another character.

You should have a few spawnable Peashooter turrets that you can grow in the plant pots that appear around a planted garden. Each will damage and/ or kill enemies. The important thing is that they need to do damage, so no healing plants for now. As soon as one of the turrets has killed an enemy, you will unlock the following:

  • Hero to Zero

Vanquish an opponent using a Potted Plant or Zombot Turret.

After this, beat all of the remaining waves to complete the mission. There isn’t much in the way of tips here, it should be fairly easy and straight forward. Assuming you have picked both the Kernel Corn and the Rose in your team, you should be able to earn:

  • Aww Shucks!

As Kernel Corn, vanquish 25 Zombies with the Shuck Shot.

After you earn this, switch to the Rose and you can start making progress towards Goatifying 100 zombies. You may even be lucky enough to get this, but if not, keep using Goatify on as many zombies possible (it’ll wear off after a few seconds then you can cast on the same enemy multiple times as long as they’re alive). Once you get 100, either in the mission or later on, you’ll earn:

  • You’ve Goat to Be Kidding Me!

    As Rose, Goatify 100 Zombies.

Once you finish this mission, you’ll return to the Backyard, so head to Davebot. Of you have completed any quests, go to the board and select another to replace it. Then head to the vending machine, to the right and behind the notice board. This is where you’ll spend your had earned coins on sticker packs for more consumable plant and zombie turrets, as well as parts of character skins. My favourite pack was the character pack that awards you a whole skin in one go, rather than unlocking only a single part of a skin. Buy any packs you fancy, then head to Davebot for your next quest.

The next quest takes you to the Flag of Power, in the No-Mans Land in the middle of the Battleground. First follow the arrow to the box that has spawned on the map. Destroy the box to spawn an ally, then raise the flag. Now simply defend the flag until the quest completes. If you wander too far away from the flag the zombies will capture it, thus failing the mission. As soon as you beat the wave of Pirate zombies, you will finish the mission. This is also another good spot for grinding out the achievements for Rose and Kernel Corn (mention above) Head back to Davebot for the next quest.

The next mission is another Garden Ops mission. Follow the same sort of strategy here as you did in the first Ops mission, it doesn’t differ too much. The mission here ends after wave 5, same as before. You’ll be attacked by ninja zombies, with increasing difficulty over 5 wave. Once again, try to work towards the Rose and the Kernel Corn’s achievements (Rose will need a bit more grinding of the two). Once you finish, you’ll return to the Backyard, and speak to Davebot again.

Your 5th mission is to destroy the three tombs that are dotted around the map. Once again, they are highlighted, so make your way to all three and fire at them to destroy them. They are destroyed by placing fireworks next to them, which is done by approaching the tombs and holding . Once the three main tombs have been destroyed, you’ll be able to use a large cannon to fire yourself into the Zombie’s fortress. From here, ignore the objectives, and go up the stairs into the main building. After a few seconds in the building, you’ll earn

Place all the explosives and wait for the boss to spawn. This boss is a Disco Zombie. He has only a few sets of attacks. A whirlwind melee attack which makes him invulnerable but stuns him after he has finished the move and a machine-gun salvo, which can be avoided by hiding behind cover. Best bet is to attack from cover where you can and try not to get too close when he uses his whirlwind ability. Once that has been depleted, do as much damamge as possible while he recovers, then rinse and repeat. I used a Corn for this, however, a Peashooter is an equally as good choice (use his Pea Gatling while the boss is stunned and aim for the head). As soon as you beat him and finish the mission, the following will unlock for you:

  • Just Sprouted

    Complete ‘Boom Tombs’.

Return to Davebot, and he’ll make you a true member of L.E.A.F.

From here, head into your main stats room, up behind the quest board (remember to refill any quests if you can). Head out the back of the stats room and you’ll see three ways that you can go, each leads to a different L.E.A.F. Agent with their own quests. First, go straight forward towards the middle yellow glowing orb and activate it to open a portal. Head into the portal, then once out the other side walk forward and speak to Agent Corn to get his first quest.

Agent Corn

For his first mission, you’ll be taken to another area, and after choosing your character, will begin another Garden Ops mission. This is effectively the same as the previous Garden Ops missions, which you probably know and love by now. If you don’t you’ll be doing a load more yet. Same advice as before for characters, and remember to grow some potted plants to help you out. After you reach, round 5, the mission will end and you’ll be brought back to Agent Corn. Speak with him for your next mission.

After Accepting the next mission, Black Husk Down, you’ll spawn back on the ramparts of the Plant fortress. Head over to the objective, then you have to defend the Nuke Juice. Agent Corn will help by deploying airstrikes, but after a while they’ll stop and a Gargantuan will appear. NPC Corn variants will appear and start helping you defend the juice, and after killing all the remaining zombies, the mission will end. From here, head back through the Backyard and stats room to Agent Corn.

As soon as you start the next mission, you’ll be have to turn around and head towards the objective arrow and climb into the Butterhawk to provide air support to Agent Corn as he plants the Tactical Cuke. This is a pretty fun mission, similar to the AC130 mission from one of the CoD Modern Warfare games (I forget which). From the Butterhawk, you need to provide overwatch to Agent Corn as he places the Cuke. Press to switch between the Full Auto Kernels and the Corn Cob Cannon, you can use either and can freely switch throughout the mission. You shouldn’t have any issues here, just keep Agent Corn protected ad you’ll finish the mission in no time. Once the Cuke is placed and detonated, the mission will end and you’ll have finished all of Agent Corn’s missions, earning you:

  • On the Cob

    Complete ‘Zero Bark Thirty’.

Once you finish the mission, speak with Agent Corn once again, he’ll mention that he’s opened the shed for you. From where you are speak to him, turn around to face the portal, and head to the right,. Look to your right again, go between the hangers and you should see a large shining treasure chest. Go and open it to get a load of coins and a special character decoration that you can wear. While you are here, we’ll make a start on another, vastly more in-depth achievement. From the treasure chest, look to your right and head down a small alley behind the hanger that Agent Corn is in. You should see a golden gnome on a pedestal. Walk up to it and collect it. This is the first of 54 Golden Gnomes that you need to collect, I’ll make sure to mark the others if we’re near them, but most I’ll cover most of them in one section so you can run around and get them. (Golden Gnome #1/54)

Now onto the next Agent. Leave the Corn Field, but before going into the next portal, go and change character and choose to be the Citron. While on your way past. feel free to top up on quests if there are any (they refresh each day) and buy any sticker packs you want. Now head to the Agent Citron portal, which it the orange orb to the right, as there is another achievement that you can grind out in his missions.

Agent Citron

Speak to Agent Citron, then start his first mission.

The first part is pretty straight forward, simply go to the highlighted area and place the triangulators at the marked locations, then defend them from the attacking zombies. You have to stay within the area in order to continue the triangulation. If you get low on health, run away and hide to allow your health to recover a little, then continue the mission.

After placing and defending all three triangulators, you’ll get a short cinematic, then an enemy Imp will appear from orbit in his Mech and attack you. Don’t not attack back, instead, use your EMPeach ability and stun him. After the stun, run away and hide until your ability has recharged, then repeat this process. This will be a bit of a grind, but after pulling off 25 stuns, you’ll earn

  • Just Peachy!

    Stun 50 Z-Mechs using Citron’s EMPeach.

You may need to repeat this mission a few times in order to grind out the achievement, but it shouldn’t take you too long.

Once you’ve earned this, destroy the mech (remember to attack the done where the imp is sitting to do critical damage. Because this isn’t any old imp, it is an N7 imp, defeating it will also earn you an achievement (Mass Effect anybody?):

  • My Favourite Z-Mech on the Citadel

As a Plant, vanquish the Z7 Imp.

Destroying the Imp will also conclude the mission. Head back to Agent Citron for you next mission.

For your next mission, you are taken to the Lunar Landing for another Garden Ops match. Choose any allies you wish, although I definitely recommend at least one Sunflower for healing, then go ahead and plant the garden. Same as before, you shouldn’t have much issue defeating the first few waves, however, in the final wave, you’ll be facing standard zombie minions, as well as a Mecha-Gargantuar boss zombie. The Mecha-Gargantuar has similarities to the Gargantuar that you have faced in previous missions. Similar to the Gargantuar, he can quickly rush towards you and slam the ground and his ranged attacks and slam have electrical properties that cause extra damage. Try to attack when the Mech is about to launch a bomb as it remains rooted while doing this. This boss is also covered in armour, so takes reduced damage from all weapons, however the head is both unarmoured and provides critical hits, so always try to aim for the head. After defeating this boss and finish the Garden Op, you’ll return to the Backyard. Return to Agent Citron for you final mission with him.

In this mission, you have to find and the help Ironball, the Iron Citron, to vanquish another enemy boss. Ironball is found locked up in a cage behind the Town Hall, the objective arrow will show you the location. You’ll be fighting some basic zombie minions on the way. Once you get to him, a Robo-Zombie will appear, that you will have to kill in order to obtain the key to release Ironball.

After you get the key and release him, follow the next objective arrow over to the Docks, where you’ll find the final boss for this mission. It is worth noting that Ironball will not go into ball form, so the you have to move as slowly as he does while on your way. When you arrive a ne Imp will spawn and summon his mech, the S.H.RIMP. Don’t get too close to the platforms over the Docks to fight as the S.H.RIMP can attack and send you flying into the drink for an easy kill. Instead, stay on dry land and fire away. Again, try to aim for his head for extra damage, then also remember to use your EMPeach to stun him.

Once he has been defeated, you’ll earn:

  • Mango Tango

    Complete ‘Showdown’.

You’ll be taken back to Agent Citron and be told that there is a chest waiting for you downstairs. Head downstairs and look left to see a glass pod that is now accessible. The Chest is just inside, so open it for all the coins and another new customisation item.

Once again, head into the final Plant portal to find Agent Rose.

Agent Rose

Your first mission for Agent Rose is another Garden Ops mission. You’re transported to the Colizeum. Grow whichever allies you wish, and go through the same process as with every other Garden Ops up until this point. Remember to use plant pots to aid you if need. The boss for this Ops mission is Baron Von Bats. He can be quite an annoying opponent, as he has a short range teleport and can disappear and reappear in a few seconds. His electrical ranged attack also does decent damage. My recommendation is to keep on your toes, or roots in this case, in order to avoid him. You can usually have a good guess at where his teleport will end by following the bats that surround him. I’d suggest not using an ability that will root you in place, such as the Pea Gatling or Sunbeam as your mobility here is key. Just to top it off, his melee attacks will drain you health and replenish his, and he can summon a handful of basic Vampire Zombies too, although these are easy to defeat. Aim for the head, hide behind objects to avoid his electrical attack, and be mindful of his teleport.

After completing this wave, you’ll finish the mission and be taken back to Agent Rose. Speak to her again for your next mission, “Power and Potential”. You’ll spawn near the park in the Backyard, walk forward and speak with Agent Rose. You’ll have to summon a BBQ using the wand you retrieved from the first mission, then once it has been summoned you need to defend it from the zombies that appear. After a little while, a Yeti Zombie boss will appear.

The Yeti Zombie has lower health than other bosses, but he can be an annoying to attack as he is quite fast and difficult to land a hit on when he is moving around. The Yeti Zombie’s main attack is throwing an icicle at you. This attack is not strong but inflicts a slowing effect similar to most ice other characters, such as Ice Pea. If any plants come too close, he will freeze everyone nearby for a short period of time. When the Yeti dances, he will summon an Icicle Strike similar to the Corn Strike. This Icicle Strike hits you rapidly and slow you down. Best strategy is to stay back and hit him as often as possible, but take out the smaller zombies first, as if you are frozen by the Yeti they will build up around you and make it even harder. Also, don’t play as a Chomper as they are effectively useless against the Yeti.

After defeating the Yeti, you’ll have finished the mission. Before you start the next mission, switch to a Chomper to help with another achievement. Return to the Rose to start the next mission.

The next mission involves destroying the tombstone rifts that have spawned around the Backyard. Follow the objective arrows around and do enough damage to each rift in order to destroy them. While doing so, a number of Goat enemies will spawn and attack you. As the Chomper, Burrow into the ground and eat one of the goats. This will net you:

  • Goatmeal

As the Chomper, swallow a Goat.

After destroying and closing the third and final rift, the boss will spawn. This is the Gargoatuar. In order to make this easier, let the Gargoatuar or his minions kill you so you can quickly respawn and change character. Change to basically anyone you want other than a Chomper. The Gargoatuar has no ranged attacks, so the best strategy is to stay at a distance and fire away, or try climbing onto a roof and firing from there. Once you’ve killed him, you’ll finish the mission and return to Rose and you’ll unlock

  • Her Majesty

    Complete ‘Well That Escalated Quickly’.

After this, head back to the garage and speak to Davebot again. He will explode and the car to your left will raise. Head down the stairs underneath it, follow the path and find the next Davebot (Davebot 3000.1) who will welcome you to L.E.A.F HQ. This is your final set of quests before you become a member of L.E.A.F. For your first quest, you have to protect some presents from attacking pirate zombies. You’ll have to protect the first present for 45 seconds then the second will need to be defended for 60 seconds. The third present, you’ll be attacked by a Gargantuar, and you’ll be defending for 1:30. I’d suggest being either the Peashooter or the Kernel Corn, try sticking to the same character and same variant as well as you’ll need to level them up to their max for another achievement. After defending the last present, you’ll finish the mission.

Head back to Davebot to start the next mission. which is based around retrieving a stolen present. This is another Garden Ops match. This is the same as all previous Garden Ops matches, with a Gargantuar spawning on wave 5, then the gift appearing at the end of the wave. However, when you open the gift, an invincible boss zombie will spawn, Captain Smasher. As you are unable to kill him, you just have to defend the garden and survive for 1:30. Take out the weaker zombies that attack the garden first, then do your best to avoid Captain Smasher when he gets near you. Usually after he approaches, the zombies stop attacking the garden and start going for you, so you can just run away at this point. Use plant pots to your advantage and either grow some extra firepower or a sunflower for some healing if you can. You should have a handful of self revives by now if you’ve been opening sticker packs with coins, so if you do die, you’ll be able to revive yourself a maximum of three times. After the timer expires, you’ll be picked up by Crazy Dave and the mission will end.

The next quest is Boss Hunt mission. You’ll be doing some similar Boss Hunts later on for some of the DLC achievements, but for now, this is your taster for this type of mode. Grow some allies, and in this case, I’d suggest choosing a Chomper, a Sunflower, then anyone else you fancy. However, it is also worth noting that if you spawn fewer AI allies, i.e. only you and two others rather than three others, there will be fewer zombies in each wave, and the boss should be easier to defeat. The fewer allies spawned, the easier it gets (at least in terms of damage dealt to you/ zombie volume and boss health etc).

After choosing allies, follow the arrow and place you bait where you had directed. This first phase pits you against a few waves of basic zombies which will try to destroy the bait you placed, so simply defend it with help from your AI partners. At some point, the bait will start to act strange, which is the cue that the last wave is about to spawn. As soon as you beat this last wave, Captain Smasher will spawn.

Your team will get 20 minutes now to beat this Boss. He will attack at range by shooting his cannon at your and your allies and will also occasionally will charge you and use a ground pound attack that throws you back a bit. However in general, he’s fairly straightforward and not too hard to defeat…

However, after you drain roughly a quarter of his health, Captain Smasher will hit you with the Curse of Captain Smasher. This not only makes Captain Smasher invincible, but you are also only given a short amount of time (around 1 minute 20 seconds) to vanquish the curse-bearing zombie, otherwise you and you allies will all be wiped out. If this does happen, you can use a self revive, (although if your allies die without being revived in time, they will disappear for the rest of the round) or you have to restart the mission.

In order for the curse to not fully take effect, you must kill the curse-bearing zombie. This zombie is usually a barrel zombie (so it can take a decent amount of damage before dying). You can easily find it by scanning the area and looking for a red bar above its head, similar to boss health bar. Find the curse-bearing zombie as quickly as possible, ignoring all other zombies. This is where the Chomper comes into great use. Switch to him, burrow down under the curse-bearing zombie and try to eat it from underneath. This will destroy the barrel in a single hit, allowing the other AI to take him out with little effort (or you could switch to another character and do it yourself even quicker). After that zombie has been killed, the curse will be lifted and you can continue your fight against Captain Smasher. This will repeat two more times (usually) throughout the mission, when the boss is at roughly half health and one quarter health. After you have defeated the boss, the mission will end and you’ll earn:

  • Curseproof

    Complete ‘Captain Smasher’s Curse’.

Congratulation you are now an Agent of L.E.A.F. You will be taken up to the top of the Tree of Celebration and are given permission to look cool!

You’ll now be given access to Infinity. This will likely be your first time in this area (one of the DLC game modes is based in Infinity, so if you have played multiplayer at the right time, this will not be completely new to you). After you accept the mission to enter Infinity, a short cinematic will play showing the vehicle that you will be using, and then will show you being transported into Infinity.

Since it can take a little explaining, and you can access Infinity as both the Plants and as the Zombies, I’ll stick all the information about infinity on a new page, which is just after the Zombie campaign walkthrough.

Now matter how far many waves you complete in your first time in Infinity, when you die, you’ll first go to a small area where you can open chests. The type of chests and the rewards you get are dependent on how many Time Shards you collected during the match. Once you leave this screen, you’ll respawn back in L.E.A.F headquarters. Speak to Davebot one more and finish that conversation, then you’ll earn;

  • West Indian Lilac

    Enter Infinity as a Plant.

Congratulations, you’ve finished the Plant Campaign. Now onto the Zombies!
