Cost to Build a Kitchen in 2023

Kitchens provide the most value in a home. But, unfortunately, they’re also the most expensive part of your living space.

If you pursue a custom kitchen installation project, the cost can range from under $10,000 to over $100,000. But, of course, it all depends on your existing setup, what type of space you’d like to create, and the materials used to turn those dreams into a reality.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect when requesting a quote from our team to build a kitchen.

Cost Per Square Foot for New Kitchens

A custom kitchen means something different for each home. If you’re remodeling this space, it’ll cost less than starting one from scratch.

The cost differences between remodeling vs. new for a kitchen are typically due to wiring and plumbing needs. You can see significant savings when you can avoid that work and not need to move appliances to a different location.

As with any home project, you’ll need to consider your new kitchen’s labor, material, and design costs. Although you can save some cash by tackling some DIY projects, you can still expect to pay between $75 to $300 per square foot.

You’ll have added costs for demolition work and appliances that need to get hauled away.

Hiring a Kitchen Designer

Although hiring a kitchen designer is optional, it’s a good idea to consider if you want custom components included in this space. In addition, when speaking with your potential contractors or candidates, you’ll want to ensure they meet industry certifications.

You should receive a detailed estimate of their work. The best designers understand your ideas and include them in ways that make sense for your desired outcomes.

Considering Kitchen Costs by Type

Kitchens come in all different shapes and sizes today. If you want everything customs in this space, you can expect an estimate in the six figures for most homes. Although the cost is high, the value received through increased value or equity is also there. Most homeowners get between 75% to 90% returned to them at the time of sale.

If you’re thinking about installing a new outdoor kitchen, the average cost in 2022 for that setup is about $13,000 to $20,000.

Some homes can have a small kitchenette or a wet bar installed for about $5,000.

When you need to add a kitchen to a guest suite or expand the capabilities of your current space, the price is typically from $25,000 to $50,000. Your estimate depends on the amount of work, including retrofitting, that might be necessary.

If you’re pulling out an old kitchen to add a new one, the estimate depends on how much demolition work and new installs you want or need. Some homeowners might pay $15,000 or less, while others might receive $40,000 or more quotes.

Cost of Building Elements in a New Kitchen

One way to keep costs down with a new kitchen is to splurge on one custom element while keeping everything else to a builder’s grade material or product.

Here are some general cost estimates that can help you decide if this route is the one to take for your kitchen installation.

  • New floors typically cost anywhere from $1,500 to $4,500. It’s based on the square footage and the materials selected. You should avoid carpet in this room.
  • Cabinets tend to be one of the most expensive elements of a new kitchen. Stock products are typical $150 per foot or lower, but custom options can be as much as $1,500 per foot.
  • Countertops should be heat-resistant, durable, and prevent stains. Laminate tends to be the cheapest, while marble is more expensive. Many homeowners choose Formica, wood, or concrete to keep costs down while enjoying a more customized look.
  • Adding a kitchen island increases the cost of this project by a few hundred or a few thousand dollars. It depends on the size, scope, and extent of the design.

Although the entire kitchen receives a lot of attention, the countertops spend the most time in the spotlight. Deciding on a synthetic or a natural stone ensures your cost expectations are consistent while achieving the look you want.

Counters don’t need to be granite or marble to be effective. You can even use porcelain tile as an option.
