What’s the Best Paint Finish for Kitchens & Bathrooms?

When it comes to that time in your remodel project to select paint where does one start – the color, sheen, manufacturer, or the cleanability? Does the area in the house depict the type of the paint you should buy – damp versus dry, and what about the cleanability? How about the wall textures that play a part in paint selection?

What’s the Best Paint Finish for Your Kitchen?

Let’s begin with one of the main areas of the house people are looking at to paint – the kitchen (mostly dry area but needs to be cleanable). The paint that is used for the kitchen varies due to the levels of moisture and oil resistance. When looking for a kitchen paint there is not a particular brand you will be looking for, it is the formula that the paint company uses.

When it comes to the walls, our recommendation is a satin, semi-gloss, or even a high gloss finish, which all can be easily wiped clean of any splatters. However, remember that the higher the sheen, the more it will show any imperfections. So, when selecting a finish for your kitchen walls, you might look at satin or semi-gloss finishes as they are easier to clean and stand up to mildew, stains, and dirt.

The same logic stands true to painting your kitchen cabinets as well. Contemporary or transitional kitchens are popular trends today. High gloss can be used as it does reflect a ton of light and is great for bringing light into smaller areas. Remember, a high gloss finish will show a lot of imperfections and fingerprints. It is recommended that you wait at least 30 days after using a high gloss paint to scrub with a mild to heavy force.

What’s the Best Paint Finish for Your Bathroom?

While we are discussing areas of the house that might need additional information before painting, another area is the bathroom. Claims have been made that you should use an eggshell finish as it is more durable and easier to clean than semi-gloss (which is durable and easy to clean, just not so much as eggshell). While a semi-gloss finish does look shinier, the downfall is that it also shows all the imperfections. We recommend that you stay away from flat or matte paints in areas that have water as they tend to grow mold and mildew much faster than other sheens. Matte paints are also harder to clean and are not very resistant to stains.

Which Paint Brand Should You Choose?

Which paint company is better than the rest? How does one choose? When interviewing painters, the strong front runners are Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore, with both of these having had recent issues with availability due to the pandemic.

What do you need to look for when selecting the brand of paint and are there any paints at the local hardware stores that would work as well? Benjamin Moore offers Aura Bath and Spa as their choice of mildew resistant paint for the bathroom, which offers a matte finish designed for high-humidity environments. Sherwin Williams offers a superpaint with sanitizing technology that helps prevent the spread of bacteria on painted surfaces. The local hardware stores carry a KILZ as their option for mildew resistance film for high humidity and moisture prone areas.

How to Select Paint for Your Home

So, when choosing a paint for your home, make sure and follow some quick guidelines to assist you in the process:

  • Which areas of your home will you be painting?
  • What are the activities that are being done?
  • Whichever paint you decide to use, remember to identify which sheen you are striving for and if you need paint with any additional attributes.
